The DC Comics Universe is inhabited by all manner of hero and villain. To better catalog this expansive pantheon, Mattel is releasing these new DC Action League 2 packs. They show each character as they should be—in the cutest form possible! That’s right, these guys have been made in the same style as the recent Batman: Brave & The Bold Action League figures (that this series is also replacing) and have kept that fun, artsy, and energetic look. The first series includes 4 separate 2-packs, so let’s check ‘em out!
Superman & Bizarro: The Man of Steel finds himself pitted against his flawed (and rather ignorant) doppleganger, Bizarro! Supes is sculpted amid takeoff (including a clear plastic stand so he can balance properly); but, Bizarro lucks out by coming with a giant hunk of, what could be, Kryptonite. We’re talkin’ a whole boulder of the stuff here! The best part of these two has gotta be that creepy smile plastered on Bizarro’s mug. He even manages to have a solitary yellowed tooth peeking out. Fantastic!
The Flash & Captain Boomerang: Captain Boomerang? Wow. They went out on a limb for this pack. Normally Captain Cold would be going toe-to-toe with the Scarlet Speedster; but, it seems that George “Digger” Harkness has worked himself into the hallowed halls of toy villainy. His figure features one of the more detailed paint apps in the series, thanks to all the f’n boomerangs he has strapped to his chest. The Flash, like Superman comes with a plastic stand in order to keep him from toppling over due to his extreme pose. Captain Boomerang is down on one knee, preparing to toss the curved weapon of his namesake; but this package goes to The Flash for an all-around great look.
Green Lantern Hal Jordan & White Lantern Sinestro: Arguably the coolest pack in the series comes from the soon-to-be universally popular Hal Jordan, and his unyielding nemesis, Sinestro. Showing just how up to date these packs are, Sinestro sports his recently short-lived (and possibly upcoming) turn as a White Lantern. Both figures feature simplified round rings with the designs stamped on. They are very clean and there is no fuzziness or gaps in the designs. Sinestro seems to have scored the better paint apps, but that could be thanks to the color scheme. It’ll be nice if this line sticks around and we’re able to collect more of the various Corps members… we sure could go for a tiny, blood-spewing Atrocitus!
Firestorm & Deathstorm: From the recent Blackest Night/Brightest Day storyline come Firestorm and Deathstorm! Both figures feature heads made of translucent plastic, to show off their fiery noggins. The detailing on both figures is good; and while both are posed similarly, these are two different sculpts. All of the detailing on the bodies is sculpted in. The two figures have opposing colors and really help them stand out as rivals.
These new DC Universe Action League figures look to be a proper continuation of the current Batman: B&B series. The possibilities are endless now when it comes to using the entire DC Universe’s library of characters, and we hope that Mattel is able to take full advantage of it. Look for these 2-packs at all major retailers within the next month or so.
