Hey Flash Fans! We’re kicking off a new feature today called Flashpoint Facts, where we give you the rundown of everything that’s going on in the DC Universe leading up to this Summer’s big Flashpoint event – plus a little bit of our analysis.
First, what we know so far: Flashpoint is a time based event where Barry Allen is racing against time to battle… Someone… In order to repair the DCU timeline. Either one thing, or multiple things happen that cause nearly irreparable damage to time; so much so, that people in the future can’t properly view 2011 without getting some really bad eyestrain. Or at least, the history books seem to be a little vague on the subject.
Flashpoint will run (puns!) through five issues of its own series, as well as the current Flash title, and fifteen separate series that will help flesh (not really a pun!) out the world of the book.
Okay, now that you’re caught up, here’s what we learned this week:
The cover to Flashpoint #1, by Andy Kubert and Sandra Hope started hitting the webs… And it actually has a good deal of info. We’ve heard that Flash may lose his costume at some point, which seems to be a big deal beyond the implied nudity; and on the cover here, there it is starting to rip apart. Note: I will honestly thought at first glance he was spraying blood from his fingers. Anywho.
Also, if you look at the cityscape in the background, its covered with Bruce Wayne “W”s, though it’s a little difficult to tell what the rest of the text says. If our next bit is to be believed, I’d guess at least one of the other words is “Casino.”
Most importantly though, are the four figures in the background, who we’ll get a clearer look at it a second.
But first, some logos!
DC released these on Friday, along with some enigmatic teaser phrases. What we can glean from ‘em, in gist: Cyborg is the new Superman; Captain Cold is a hero, probably because there’s no Flash; Deathstroke is calling himself Ravager, and is probably a good guy freedom fighter; there’s someone called The Outsider; and Plastic Man is top secret. Something like that. Basically, the world is topsy-turvy, villains are good, good guys are villains, and Catman is sleeping with dogs.
Okay, fine, fine, you wanted clear views. The figures in the back of the cover are now clearly Cyborg, who we’ve already covered; Batman, who we’re guessing effectively answers Mark Millar’s question about what if he was a c**t, without the white costume; and Wonder Woman, who has probably conquered Europe with her Amazonian tribe, and her husband Aquaman.
Sure, a lot of this is supposition, but we’re guessing we’re close to the truth, given the sheer amount of info that’s coming out right now. Oh, and speaking of which, we saved the biggest piece for last:
That there is the last page of Time Masters: Vanishing Point #6, which has a picture of the now traditional Rip Hunter teaser board. For those of you not up to speed, Rip Hunter is a master of time travel, and his blackboard is often filled with teases for the upcoming year of DC Comics. This is no different, of course. A few we’ve covered already, but it looks like we’ll be getting a mash-up between Captain Marvel and T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, a starring role for Booster Gold, and most importantly, Jem and the Holograms will play in big with this event. JK, you guys. Though not actually far off.
So what are your thoughts so far, Flash fans? Getting psyched for this event? Or does it make you want to run in the opposite direction. Pun definitely intended that time.
