The 2011 American International Toy Fair is but mere days away, and we are gonna be right in the thick of things as we bring you the most comprehensive coverage as humanly possible… well, as humanly possible for a bunch of people with their faces melted off thanks to the sheer unabashed magnitude of the toy reveals We’ve scheduled booth tours, tons of interviews, and will have a purely ridiculous amount of video and photos to satiate even the most toy-collecting diehard’s hunger for that sweet new plastic need! In fact, we’ve put together a completely random list of highlights we’re looking forward to having burned into the very core of your retinas, right here on MTV Geek.
The Dead Walk! – Recently we broke the news about McFarlane Toys’ upcoming action figure lines based on The Walking Dead television AND comic book series. At Toy Fair, we’re gonna hunt down and lay waste to Rick Grimes, Michonne, and the rest of the gang with the clicking of our cameras and the drool from our lips. Hey guys, we don’t have the greatest self control.
Thunder Gods & Super Patriots – After seeing those bitchin’ Superbowl trailers for the upcoming Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger films, we are pumped to see what the toy companies are bringing to the table. We’ll have pics, video, and info from Hasbro, Diamond Select Toys, and even Jakks Pacific on all things Marvel-related whether they’re comic or film related.
ThunderCats, Hooooo! – Lion-O and his gang of furry miscreants have been making headlines recently. Since the news that the Cats were going to be getting a new animated series, it seems like a couple of companies have managed to corner the market on the Thunderan heroes and their vicious rivals. Mezco floored us with their large-scale Lion-O figure, and then Bandai America one upped them with a few photos from not one, not two, but three ThunderCats action figure lines! The 8” line is our obvious favorite thanks to the faithrulness to the original cartoon and the super poseability. What more will Bandai have awaiting us? We’ll just have to find out together very, very soon.
McFarlane Speaks! – Yes, we mentioned McFarlane Toys earlier, but this is for a whole different beast. MTV Geek will be sitting down one-on-one with Todd to chat about toys, comics, and any number of things that he might wanna voice. Be prepared.
More Than Meets the Eye! – With the recent unveiling of action figures based on The Hub’s Transformers Prime, and the upcoming release of Transformers III: Dark of the Moon, Hasbro will most definitely be bringing a bevy of the big bots to Toy Fair! We’ll have complete coverage of every gear and Energon cube that makes it’s way onto their showroom floor. While the new TF3 Optimus Prime is a lock, the big question is “Will we see the (rumored) tanker truck version of Megatron?”
Simply The Classics – Mattel has already promised figure reveals from their collector-based Masters of the Universe Classics line; however, who will they be showing off?! We have to know! For Pete’s sake, why must we endure another minute without being aware of the toys that will be filling our shelves over the coming months?! Okay, we’ve gotten a hold on ourselves… shew. So, that little outburst brings us to the DC Universe Classics. Fans have been on the fence (and by “on the fence” we mean “raging unchecked on message boards”) about the current move of the line towards what seem to be themed waves. This has put more than a few collectors on edge as they’re rightfully worried they’ll never get to complete the Metal Men or the Doom Patrol. Mattel has promised fans that upcoming waves once again feature a mixed-bag of DC characters, including more than a few Golden Age JSA members. Who might these heroes or villains be? We’ll be finding out on Sunday during Mattel’s Collector Press Event, and you’ll know soon after a well.
In Brightest Day… - The Green Lantern film is set for release on June 17th, but the stores are going to be awash in emerald long before then. Mattel has the license for various Green Lantern movie toys, and they’re not resting on their laurels. There is currently a 3 ¾” Hal Jordan figure up for order as a ToysRus.com exclusive and is packaged with figure stand that houses a die-cast power ring, and that’s just for starters! While some preliminary pictures have been released, we expect to see a whole galaxy of willpower-laden warriors in all shapes and sizes!
Spooonnn! – Shocker Toys has finally started releasing their much-anticipated Tick action figures to the patiently waiting fans, but the rest of Indie Spotlight Series 2 is still being produced. Shocker isn’t letting slow factories hold the up, as they are set to reveal even more figures in that line, the Golden Age Spotlight line, and an as yet unnamed line that they will be unveiling for the world at Toy Fair. Oh, and DMC from Run DMC is going to be making an appearance at their booth to promote his new Shocker Toys’ figure as well. How cool is that?
Legends Revealed? – Hasbro has stated that the much-loved Marvel Legends series of 6” figures will be returning to the toy aisle in 2011. Recently, the only way to purchase new Legends was to score the Toys R’ Us-exclusive 2 packs. Will more exclusives be heading TRU’s way later this year, or will they wait it out and just launch the new line? Either way, we have our fingers crossed that we’ll get a glimpse of 6” Marvel goodness. Regardless, we’ll be covering every tight-wearin’ do-gooder they decide to produce, no matter what the scale.
The Unknown – The coolest part of Toy Fair is finding that special toy that went under everyone’s radar and ends up blowing your damn mind! Will it come from an established company and line, or will something crawl its way out from the ether thanks to some hungry upstart? Who knows, but we aim to find out!
So join us, right here on MTV Geek for all the ups and downs, ins and outs, and general toy goodness as we bring you tons and tons of coverage from The 2011 American International Toy Fair.
