It’s Wednesday again (I know, right?), so it means its time for new comic books! Hooray! Get rid of those old comic books, they’re stale and musty you guys.
Anyway, it’s a lighter week for us, with a few stand-outs. Right at the top of our pull list is DAREDEVIL #2. The first issue got our coveted pick of the month, and for good reason: it’s a beautiful, extremely well written book that reeks of brilliance from top to bottom. If the second issue is half as good… Well, it won’t be as good. But it’ll still be one of the best comics ever made, and we don’t expect writer Mark Waid and friends to let us down. Oh, and if you missed the first issue? Waid a few of Marvel’s editors cleverly recorded an audio version of the book, which you can download for free. That’s awesome.
Most of Marvel is still mired (and we mean that in the best sense of the word) in the Fear Itself crossover, which finds mystical hammers and Nazi mech-suits terrorizing our heroes. THUNDERBOLTS #162 is a must pick up – that title has been pretty much a perfect exploration of the fine line between villains and heroes during wartime each issue, as they deal with the aftermath of their facility being destroyed. Meanwhile, over in AVENGERS ACADEMY #18, they’re, er, dealing with the exact same thing. But they’re teenagers, so it’s totally different. JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #626 is a completely different story, though, because it’s about Loki as a teenager trying to figure out if he’s a villain or a hero as… Oh forget it. They’re all great books, pick ‘em up.
Marvel is also holding a parallel event with their merry mutants, which continues in X-MEN SCHISM #3 (which we’ll have a chat with the creators about on Thursday, so stay tuned!) – another big issue that welcomes artist Daniel Acuna. Running parallel to that is a more charactery exploration of one aspect of the event in GENERATION HOPE #10, which starts to round out Kieron Gillen’s run on the title. And congrats to writer James Asmus, who is taking over as of issue #13, by the way!
Continuing on the event track, this is a lighter week for DC’s Flashpoint event. We’ll be picking up FLASHPOINT THE OUTSIDER #3, because we like James Robinson’s quirky anti-hero, and hope he turns up post relaunch. On the Vertigo side of things, there’s FABLES #108, which deals with the fallout from the recent superhero storyline, and hey, FABLES is always solid, so there you go.
If you’re looking for non-Big Two, non-event books though, you’ve got WALKING DEAD #88 which is going to make some fans flip out, and some… Well, super flip out. Basically, we find out the final fate of Rick Grimes son Carl. I will say no more.
Dynamite has THE BOYS: BUTCHER BAKER CANDLESTICKMAKER #2, which continues the long awaited origin of the leader of The Boys from Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. And fans of the indie dark toy fantasy Stuff of Legend will be happy to know that a new book hits, STUFF OF LEGEND JESTERS TALE #1.
So, what did we miss? Should we cover graphic novels and collections? And can you come up with a better name for this column? Let us know, compadres!
