As a very musical animated heroine, Jem was known as much for her songs as for her adventures. In anticipation of Shout! Factory's release of Jem and the Holograms: The Complete Series on DVD October 11th, MTV Geek chatted with Britta Phillips, the singing voice behind Jem and an accomplished musician in her own right. Phillips estimated that she might have recorded as much as 150 different songs for the animated series, and described the unique process of putting each episode together:
"They did all the music in New York, on the East Coast, all the acting voices on the West Coast, and all the animation in Japan. So the music was first, then the voices and animation, and then they put it all together!"

Phillips enjoys the huge fan following the show still generates 20 years later:
"It's really cool meeting young adults, and older adults that watched the show, and it doesn't bother me at all...I was in a clothing store once and a girl who worked there really wanted me to sing a song -- so I went into a dressing room and sang it for her."
