This new animated trailer for for Monolith's upcoming class-based FPS, Gotham City Impostors might not get any new converts among the ranks of people scratching their heads at the idea of a comedy-tinged shooter set on the mean streets of Gotham, but as someone already looking forward to this way out of left field title, it's just one more thing keeping my interest piqued.
Here's a little blurb about the game from the developer:
Why fight crime when you can kill it.
Gotham City has gone insane! Batman is up to his pointy ears in unwanted "helpers" determined to dish out their own bloodthirsty brand of vigilante justice in his name (and image). Meanwhile, a small army of self-appointed junior Jokerz has turned the streets of Gotham into a barmy battlefield of bullets, bodies, and bear traps.
I love that it's essentially The Dark Knight's Citizens for Batman vs. a gun-toting Gathering of Juggalos since the real Batman and Joker are too busy stopping and causing crime respectively. There's something perfect and in-world about as playing as a bunch of lunatics who'd probably get messed up by the very same people they're emulating. Well, messed up="murdered a thousand different ways" where it concerns the Joker.
Monolith is the developer behind the F.E.A.R. games, so you know that the part where you aim down gunsights and kill things will at least be solid. Impostors will also have the usual hooks of player customization and progression, but what I find most interesting is the style which seems to lean towards the look of Arkham Asylum/Arkham City with a slightly exaggerated element.
Gotham City Imposters will strike on XBLA, PSN, and the PC sometime early 2012.
