Nathan Drake braves the desert in this gameplay video and Associate Producer Victor Harris teases some big moments from Naughty Dog's latest.
Oh, man, it gets said all the time and it's still not said enough: Naughty Dog's character animations are some of the best in the industry. In the gameplay video below, we're shown the Uncharted 3 protagonist in a brief, scripted section dragging himself through the desert.
Check out that body language, the way his shoulders are set, the way he carries himself with exhaustion and thirst. That's some good virtual acting, right there. Better yet, check out how loose his limbs are when he's running, like all of the strength has been sapped out of them. While the Uncharted games might be known for their puzzles and traversals, I think the real mark they're going to leave on this console generation is in character animation and voice work.
If you've played an Uncharted game in the past, the setup here will be pretty familiar, even without context: Nate has somehow found himself the survivor of a difficult encounter, and if he wants to keep living, he'll need to find safety before one of the likely many people who are trying to kill him either show up or realize that he's not dead yet. One of those two. Either way, this is a nice little lull to show off some of the gorgeous new environments for the third game while giving you a taste of voice actor Nolan North's patented banter.
Uncharted Associate Producer Victor Harris actually gives a bit of background into the encounter, explaining that this footage involves Nate seeking out the "Atlantis of the Desert." He also teases some of the other major setpieces from the upcoming game and the various locations you'll be covering throughout the sequel, including a burning French chateau which has been featured in previous gameplay videos.
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception will be available on the PS3 on November 1.
