Want to buy a cool t-shirt or print from one of your favorite artists, and help a good cause at the same time? Then if you’re coming to New York Comic Con this weekend, you’ll want to head right to Booth #241 to buy some sweet swag from the Shirts For a Cure Project!
The organization, hand in hand with the The Syrentha J. Savio Endowment, helps to provide financial assistance to underprivileged women who cannot afford expensive breast cancer medicine and therapy. And any ol’ day of the week, you can send them a donation of $14 (plus shipping and handling), to help someone who is in need, as well as receiving an exclusive shirt from your favorite band.
But at New York Comic Con, they have a number of awesome exclusives for you, from Wonder Woman’s Cliff Chiang, to Dr. Sketchy’s Molly Crabapple, to even My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way, who’s provided limited quantities of Umbrella Academy T-Shirts. Here’s the full line-up, and some previews:
- Brian Ewing, one of rock music and pop art’s most prolific, iconic image-makers, will be on hand to sign 50 hand-screened prints designed exclusively for SFAC, at the SFAC booth #241, on Friday, October 14th, starting at 2pm, while supplies last.
"When my sister was in her twenties, she had Lymphoma and could barely cover her medical expenses. Cancer is Cancer no matter who you are or where you get it. I grew up watching my sister struggle with it and trying to afford all the expense that goes with having Cancer. I believe in Shirts For A Cure and am more than happy to help them again to raise money for other women who can’t afford their medical bills. When you buy a shirt or print you’re not only representing the artist (that donated the design and proceeds to SFAC) you’re also showing that you support women who can’t afford the high cost of fighting cancer."
- Cliff Chiang, artist of the new Wonder Woman comic book series from DC Comics, will be appearing at the SFAC booth #241 on Friday, October 14 from 4 - 5 pm. He'll be signing an exclusive $10 Wonder Woman print for the first 50 fans, with all proceeds going to benefit SFAC's ongoing efforts.
"SFAC project speaks right to my heart. As the son of a breast cancer survivor, I know how devastating a breast cancer diagnosis can be, and while my mother was fortunate enough to have the medical coverage she needed, that isn't the case for everyone. It's amazing to know that an organization like SSE is out there, to help raise awareness and give assistance for treatment."
Other contributors include:
- Gerard Way, My Chemical Romance frontman and the Will Eisner Comics Industry Award-winning writer of Umbrella Academy.
"MCR have been friends with Mark Beemer, the founder of the Shirts For A Cure project, for many years and it has been great working with them to raise awareness and money for the organization. When we found out that Mark and SSE would have a booth at this year's New York Comic Con for the first time, Dark Horse Comics and I wanted to contribute an exclusive t-shirt design based off the artwork from the Umbrella Academy series that we have wanted to create for a long time. We hope to continue to help the cause."
- Molly Crabapple, the New York Times-dubbed "Downtown Phenomenon", illustrator and founder of Dr. Sketchy's Anti Art School.
- Mike Cavallaro, Eisner Award-nominated comics creator and, as "Johnny X", frequent collaborator with NJ punk legends, The Bouncing Souls, along with his own bands, Sticks & Stones and Zero Zero.
"I've known Mark Beemer for many years, initially through my own bands and others in the NJ scene, with many mutual friends in common, most of whom have, at one point or another, pitched-in to support the Shirts For A Cure Project. Right now I'm wondering what took me so long. Making your way as an artist or creative person can be a struggle. It's easy to let your own concerns dominate and to forget about the important things going on around you and the people less fortunate than you are. In a way, you're lucky when something comes along to remind you of this, which is what makes charity such a two-way street. Real thanks go out to Mark Beemer and the SFAC project for giving us all the opportunity to serve a cause larger and more important than ourselves."
Pretty cool, no? If you’re looking for a good place to wear your new T-shirt, by the way, our friends at IFanboy have teamed up for a party that will also benefit the organization. Here’s the official info:
Drinks For A Cure / iFanboy NYCC party
