Happy birthday, Claude.
"Claude," as in the mute hero of GTA III, that Claude.
Rockstar sent out this brief trailer/recap from some of the big moments in Grand Theft Auto III, which made its way onto shelves all of 10 years ago and effectively changed the landscape of gaming. Throughout the rest of the month, Rockstar plans to celebrate the release of that game, and I'm gonna put this out here right now: if we don't hear about a new GTA when all is said and done at the end of the month, I'll be really surprised. That's simply the way of these things, right? Plus, according to Rockstar's site, the GTA III will be making the leap to the iOs devices "later this fall."
Grand Theft Auto III: 10 Year Anniversary Announcement Trailer
It's hard to overstate the importance of GTA III, jumping as it did from the franchise's top-down roots to something more expansive with its wide-open mayhem. It's irreverence and deftly cinematic take* on the crime genre in games. I typically shy away from describing anything relating to games as cinematic in a positive light given that they're two broadly different mediums and that's usually a shortcut for "it has a lot of bits that you don't get to play." But the term feels apt for GTA III, which was "cinematic" in that it took a lot of reference points from film and mashed them together in an engaging way in that game (although, I'd argue that Vice City, the homage to 80's excess and coked-out Miami drug violence did it to near perfection).
