Tim Burton's B. Boy makes his Thanksgiving Day debut this year!
His movies are hardly ever turkeys, but it looks like Tim Burton is getting ready to stuff the bird this Thanksgiving with a brand new balloon at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade designed for the event by the Director. Also, a joke about pie.
Burton – who was approached by Macy’s to contribute a new, whimsically terrifying vision of balloons mostly rendered in muted colors and accompanied by the wordless choral singing of sickly children (we’re guessing) – has created a brand new character, B. Boy. His name, which is already kind of in use for another definition, stands for Balloon Boy, because he’s a Frankenstein’s Monster type creation stitched out of leftover balloons.
According to The New York Times, Burton has long been inspired by balloons ever since he decided he wanted to be a poor knock-off of Wes Bentley’s character from American Beauty. Just kidding. He actually told the paper of record, ““You see them deflated and you see them floating. There's something quite beautiful and tragic and sad and buoyant and happy, all at the same time.” So actually maybe we weren’t joking that much about the Wes Bentley thing.
In any case, the balloon will first show up this year at the Macy’s Day Parade, and then, we assume, be adapted into an increasingly garish display of excess on the big screen that will nonetheless make gobs of money.
One other change to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade? They’re all apes! All of them! This is a reference to the ending of Burton’s Planet of the Apes remake, by the way. No word on what part Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter will be playing in this year’s parade, but we’re guessing they’ll be balloons and/or Evil Santa Claus.
