Angry Birds has come to life as plush toys, board games, a recipe book and even sandals. Now, through a partnership between Rovio and Lappset Group the pissed-off avian egg-layers and their fat, sloppy, green rivals are going to be taking over schoolyards as playground equipment and ready-made “activity parks” as early as next year.
In total, the new playground equipment consists of 20 different products including animal spring riders (those things we always used to smash our face on), swings, sandpits and a few different climbing towers with slides. Not only will the Angry Birds characters be showing up on the new products, the climbing towers and slides will feature color schemes inspired by the game's environments.
“The activity parks perfectly tie in with the Angry Birds world and our way of thinking,” says Rovio’s Mighty Eagle, chief marketing officer Peter Vesterbacka.
“We will be developing a service which brings together the digital world and the physical world in a way that’s never been seen before. The popularity of Angry Birds isn’t restricted to any age, sex or social group, and the activity parks too will be designed to be interesting places for absolutely everyone, all around the world.”
Another interesting product coming out of this deal is an Angry Birds “arcade game” that will apparently be located outdoors along with the other playground equipment. While details on the arcade game are sparse at the moment, I can already see school faculty getting written up for hogging it.
For the time being it looks like the new Angry Birds playground equipment and ready-made activity parks will be staying in Europe, but it will be interesting to see how quickly the products catch on and whether or not they show up here in the U.S. We'll fill you in when we hear more.
