Finally, you can watch Nobuhiro Watsuki's scarred samurai in action.
Over the weekend, Twitch debuted the first teaser trailer for the big screen adaptation of the popular manga and anime Rurouni Kenshin (aka Samurai X), whose production is wrapping up now in advance of an August release in Japan. Directed by Keishi Ohtomo, the film stars Takeru Sato as the guilt-ridden wandering samurai looking to atone for his past.
Here's a synopsis for the movie from Asian Media Wiki:
Former legendary assassin Kenshin Himura (Takeru Sato) has now become a wandering samurai. Offerring aid & protecting those in need as atonement for his past deeds. During this time comes across and aides Kaoru Kamiya (Emi Takei). Her father opened the Kamiya Kasshin-ryu, a kendo school located in Tokyo and Kaoru is now an instructor there. Kaoru then invites Kenshin to stay at her dojo. Their relationship develops furhter, but Kenshin is still haunted by his violent past...
While it's not easy to make get too much of an impression for the movie based on this super-brief teaser, it does look like some money has been poured into the production and this might not be the usual cash-in quickie adaptation that often comes along when manga and anime make it to the big screen. Director Ohtomo doesn't have an especially long resume, so it's not clear what kind of style or feel he'll be bringing to the material.
The Warner Brothers-produced feature comes on the heels of the announcement of a new animated series earlier this year as well as rereleases of the classic series on DVD and Blu-ray through publisher Aniplex, nearly 20 years after the manga made its debut.
Rurouni Kenshin will be hitting screens in Japan August 25th.
