Want to show your support for NBC’s Community, and hopefully help make sure the program doesn’t leave their schedule permanently? Then you might want to consider being part of Thursday’s Flash Mob at 30 Rockefeller Center, home of NBC… With a felt goatee.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Flash Mob organizers are telling supporters to show up at the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree at 1pm on Thursday, December 22nd, with a felt goatee and picture or drawing of a Christmas tree on their person. If not? Felt goatees will be provided. Additionally, participants will sing “O Christmas Troy” to the tune of “O Christmas Tree,” and chant “Go Greendale Go!” at the end of the song.
To translate, for those of you who have never watched Community, and are basically the people who caused this Flash Mob in the first place:
- The Felt goatees are from a recent episode (“Advanced Chaos Theory”) which presented a few different possible alternate universe takes on the same sitcom situation. The worst one ended with two characters – Troy and Abed – donning black goatees and swearing to destroy the one good universe.
- Troy is a character on Community. You already figured that out.
- Greendale is the fictional community college the show is set at. In retrospect, it was only the felt goatees that needed explaining.
In any case, the Mob currently has 105 people noted as “Attending” on Facebook, not quite enough to keep a Network show on the air. Also, not to be a total Starburns about it, but singing Christmas songs at the Rockefeller Christmas Tree two days before Christmas is, er, maybe not the best way to be noticed. By anyone. Just saying.
In fact, if you really want to make a difference, letters sent to the Network – and the execs in charge of the show in particular – remains the second best way of getting your favorite program on the air. The best way? Courting advertisers, like fans of Chuck did with Subway when that show was almost cancelled by NBC. So you’d be well served to find a major brand involved in Community, and buy the heck out of it, making sure they get a picture of you saying, “I bought BLANK because I love Community!” Off-hand, the product mentioned the most on Community is probably Cougartown, though we somehow doubt buying Cougartown DVDs will help the former show.
That dose of cold water withstanding, if you just want a good time pre-Holidays getting together with fans of one of the best comedies currently (not) on television, you’re going to want to clear your lunch hour. We’ll have more news on the return – or not – of Community as it happens.
