An unlikely music and style icon for the 21st century against some of our readers' very first introduction to anime; two stone cold killers with mysterious pasts and deadly yet stylish methods. It's volcaloid Hatsune Miku vs. lunar-powered superheroine Sailor Moon and Vampire Hunter D against trained assassin Golgo 13.
The first matchup is one of the most unorthodox of our contest, particularly if you look at the audiences the two franchises speak to. The Sailor Moon crowd is probably generation, someone's first hit of Japanese animation, passed down between siblings or whenever some network decides to dust off the series and re-air it. On the other hand, Hatsune Miku is a thing for tech heads, older pop fans, and guys and girls interested in programming their own pop sensation. It remains to be seen if the virtual idol is the first step towards our ultimate AI enslavement.
Then there's legendary tough guys D and Golgo 13, two characters whose mere appearance evoke thoughts of either Gothic adventure or globetrotting danger. The world's deadliest assassin may have the edge given the availability of his adventures on DVD, while D's two features are sadly out of print (although thankfully still available through a couple of VOD services). But that shouldn't be any obstacle to experiencing both of their grim anthiheroics for yourselves.
