After The Avengers, and Free Comic Book Day, we’re suffering the inevitable hangover, with a relatively light week for comics. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t still some stand-outs, led by DC officially kicking off The Night of The Owls with BATMAN #9 and BATGIRL #9. Luckily, both series are the tops anyway, so you probably won’t be steered wrong, even if you’re suffering from Event-itis.
Marvel, on the other hand, takes a respite from Avengers vs. X-men... Well, except for WOLVERINE AND X-MEN #10, which shows what’s going on in everyone’s favorite (well, sharpest) Headmaster’s head during AvX #3. There’s also DEADPOOL #54, which potentially kills off the title character; and PUNISHER #11, which deals with the fall-out from The Omega Effect crossover. Okay, fine, everything is a crossover.
Dark Horse has three great offerings this week, including ALABASTER WOLVES #2. If you weren’t sold on the title from the FCBD story, we’re not friends anymore - but before we break off relations permanently, check out this issue for one of the darkest, saddest stories of supernatural extermination ever recorded. The other two comics to look out for are BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER: SEASON 9 FREEFALL #9 and LOBSTER JOHNSON: THE BURNING HAND #5, both of which are top notch.
Image has a big week, too, with a reprinting of Nick Spencer’s breakthrough graphic novel FORGETLESS. We’ve read the book, and it has all the hallmarks of Spencer’s writing, as well as his innovative structure; but the second half also has a sweetness that’s lacking in some of his more technical work, and makes this book a must read. Also from Image is SKULLKICKERS #14, one of our favorite comedy/action books on the stands, and WALKING DEAD #97, which would be hilarious if it wasn’t so relentlessly grim.
A few more to pick up: IDW has MEMORIAL #5, which has some huge reveals for fans of the series; Oni releases COURTNEY CRUMRIN #2, about everyone’s favorite teen witch (and we kind of can’t believe we’re lucky enough to get an ongoing Courtney Crumrin series, so please pick it up); and if you missed it the first time, ATOMIC ROBO: GHOST OF STATION X is a great intro to the world of Atomic Robo, with an exciting, fun, funny adventure good for all ages.
