Toonami gets a double dose of action sci-fi with two FUNimation series.
First up, we've got Casshern: Sins, the recent dark and gritty reboot/reinvention of the classic Takao Koyama series. The title character, Casshern, is a cyborg who is assassinates the potential savior of mankind thus dooming the Earth to a brutal apocalypse. The Madhouse-produced series ran for 24 episodes and is some pretty grim stuff.
Deadman Wonderland is based on the manga by Jinsei Kataoka and artist Kazuma Kondou, and it'll be the most recent series in the Toonami lineup. The story focuses on middle schooler Igarashi Ganta who survives a great quake which devastates Tokyo, although he has no memory of the event. In a grim twist, the happy-go-lucky teen is framed for the murder of his entire class by a man covered in blood, and subsequently imprisoned in the amusement park-like facility which gives the series its title. The prison rules are kind of gamified, with Ganta receiving a steady dose of poison into his bloodstream whose effects can only be countered with a special candy-like antidote that he has to earn through hard work or outright buy.
The first season ran a total of 12 episodes, and while FUNimation licensed the series for DVD in the U.S. back in 2011, but it still doesn't have a domestic release date.
Both series will make their debuts on Toonami on May 26th.
