If you've been wondering how the world will end in 2012, we now have your answer: Doctor Who's Matt Smith Who will carry the Olympic Torch to the 2012 Games, destroying all of space and time by wrecking a fixed point.
Okay, a little bit of context is in order, perhaps? In June of 2006, the BBC broadcast an episode of Doctor Who titled "Fear Her," starring David Tennant as The Doctor. Set during the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the episode ended with the final runner carrying the Olympic Torch tripping, only to be caught by The Doctor - who ran the final leg of the relay, lighting the Flame, and allowing an alien to return home or something, it honestly wasn't that great an episode.

Episode quality aside, since that broadcast, fans have secretly, quietly hoped for some sort of repeat of the stunt in their lifetime - and with the London games actually approaching, and 2012 here, the possibility seemed even closer and more feasible. Then, last night, the official BBC Doctor Who Twitter posted this:
...Which, as you can tell from the amount of retweets and favorites, made the entirety of the Internet freak out. Over the next several hours, pretty much everybody online begged the BBC to say that it was true, that David Tennant would be running the Torch through Cardiff in full Doctor Who regalia (i.e., a long brown coat). As Midnight in the UK approached, tweets using the #whowillrun hashtag were coming fast and furious, until, finally, it was revealed:
And hooray for Matt Smith and all, but if you think fans were going to let this go, well... You don't know the Internet. Cries of, "WRONG DOCTOR!" and "It's a fixed point in time! Avoid the paradox!" filled our Twitter feed. And though most were happy that Smith would be running, the main focus was on missing out on what could have been one of the all time geekiest moments in recent history.
Regardless of the whole destroying space-time thing, Smith seemed pretty pleased and honored to be taking the Torch past BBC Wales’ Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff, the home of Doctor Who. "To carry the Torch is an honour, one I thought I'd never get," Smith told the BBC, adding, "I'm very excited!"
And we're very excited to watch a rip in time large enough to swallow the whole planet open up around you, Matt. If you're in the UK, Matt’s part of the relay begins at approximately 6.20am on Saturday, May 26th at the Norwegian Church Arts Centre, Harbour Drive, Cardiff Bay, CF10 4PA. He will hand over the Olympic Flame at the Senedd, National Assembly Building, Cardiff, CF99 1NA. To find out more info, head to the BBC's official post!
