Amanda Conner has done some of the best of her career with "Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre" #1. She co-scripted the story with "Minutemen" writer/artist Darwyn Cooke, but handled the art duties herself. Conner's style can typically be explained as cartoony, occasionally veering into cute, so her name might not immediately jump to mind when we think of artists to bring life to the prequels to Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' noir-ish, dangerous world of "Watchmen." But as you'll see in our video interviews, Conner explained how her not exactly grim and gritty style fits this slice of the "Before Watchmen" pie because Laurie Jupiter is a 16 year-old girl and as Conner said, "she hasn't had time to become grim and gritty just yet."
Conner went on to explain how she pulled some of her inspiration for Silk Spectre 2 from her own life, since she herself was once a 16 year-old girl. "I was pretty crazy when I was a teenager," she says, "just ask my mom."
Amanda Conner Explains Laurie Jupiter
In our second chat with Conner, she explained--while sketching the fantastic sketch seen below--how she designed the look and style of Laurie Jupiter. "Usually when I design a costume for a character, it's usually something I want to wear," she said. Conner said that she tried to remain true to what Dave Gibbons' originated, she wanted to create the 16 year-old version of his Laurie, right down "the cute little mole."
