Join "AvX" artists John Romita Jr., Adam Kubert, and Olivier Coipel as they discuss the ins and outs of drawing a major event comic -- and gawk at all the pretty pictures while they talk! The latest episode of MTV Geek's "Avengers Vs. X-Men: War Journals" focuses on The Phoenix Five and the artists who bring them to life.
"Group books are difficult to do," Romita Jr. laments, "especially when you have writers who think: this guy can handle it, let's put in a cast of thousands!" Another issue in addition to the sheer scope of drawing an event book like "AvX" was keeping track of all the most recent character costumes, locating accurate and current reference material. And then...there was the issue about "Phoenix-Namor's" pants:
"When Olivier first drew him...he really had no pants," remembers Marvel Editor/Senior VP of Publishing Tom Brevoort. "He just had these sort of chaps. And a bunch of us just looked at it and went: I don't know if chaps really convey the regality of the Prince of Atlantis."
A Phoenix-force infused Namor wears "chaps" in this early design by Olivier Coipel
Coipel saw nothing wrong with his unique costume design...at first: "You know, in the quick design that I did, it looked good. But when I actually started to draw I looked at it and thought it made him look like a guy from a club or something."
And so was introduced leggings for Namor.
