With San Diego Comic-Con around the corner, it’s time to take a break... And look back at previous Comic-Cons. Specifically, the one documented in 2010 by Morgan Spurlock and crew in his film COMIC-CON EPISODE IV: A FAN'S HOPE, which hits DVD on July 10th. To that end, we hopped on a brief phone conference with Spurlock to find out more about the release, what its impact has been, and going back to the Con of the crime:
On what’s great about the DVD:
“What I love about this DVD is that we got to interview so many people for this film, there were a lot of folks we couldn’t put in the movie. So to expand on those interviews, that’s the thing I really love.”
On worrying whether the stories would pan out:
“When you cast a film like this, it’s a crapshoot... We wanted to find characters that had real stakes. Not knowing how its going to work out is part of the gamble.”
On whether the marriage proposal was faked:
“People love to think that we came in there and made things happened... Which I don’t do. I have no idea how things are going to end. The guy did all his own legwork... People pull off proposals in amazing ways. People do extraordinary things when they’re in love.”
On why he got to do the film, when others have failed:
“I think it had zero to do with me... They were already trepiditious about me doing a film. The only reason we got this made was because we partnered with Stan and Joss to do the film - the new, and the old guard of the Con.”
On the largeness of the shoot:
“We had 150 people, it was the biggest shoot of my life. Along the way, though, you miss things as your going, but you have to let that go. There’s 150,000 people there over four days, so you’re never going to capture everything... But I think we gave you the immensity of the Con.”
On piracy:
“I’m not precious about people bootlegging things... I want people to see my film.”
