How many of you have a basketball hoop hanging over your trash can? It can be a great way to kill some time in the office or during those long study sessions, but I for one have horrible aim. Thankfully, I'm not the only person with this problem and someone has just created an incredible solution. That may look like an ordinary trash can, but I can assure you it is not.
Though it looks all innocent and conventional, this trash can actually has a big secret – it's a robot that will catch trash regardless of how bad your aim is! That's right, sporting a set of two wheels, some nifty robotics components and the eyes of a Microsoft Kinect sensor, this trash can 'bot will follow your airborne garbage and line itself up to make the catch.
Now, I can't really go into the specifics on how everything works to make this happen, but from watching the video below we have gathered that a Kinect sensor is positioned in the room to track objects moving through the air. It seems the sensor then tells the trash 'bot where that object is, helping it figure out where to position itself for the catch. It's all very technical, but the video gives us a breakdown of the build and shows the robot in action. Check it out!
That's pretty incredible, isn't it? It looks like it was created for the commercial that plays at the beginning of the video, but I personally could play with this thing for hours. Let's just hope a production model shows up somewhere down the line.
