So this is a weird one.
According to the LA Times, the CW, home of "The Vampire Diaries," "Gossip Girl," and "Supernatural" is developing a series based on the brilliant, dystopian, and incredibly violent Japanese sci-fi thriller, "Battle Royale."
"Battle Royale" is based on the 1999 novel by Koushun Takami, and centers on the story of an alternate future Japan in which high school students are taken to a secret island, armed and forced to fight to death until only one remains.
We can assume the kids killing kids vibe in "Royale" appeals to the hungry-for-Hunger Games-success bean counters at the CW.
"Royale" was adapted into the aforementioned flick in 2000, and a manga series. An ill-fated sequel titled "Battle Royale II: Requiem" arrived in 2003, though was poorly received. Kinji Fukasaku, director of the first "Battle Royale" died during the filming of "Requiem."
There aren't many details available for the supposed series, as the LA Times source "was not authorized to speak about it publicly."

BTW, "Battle Royale" is now available on Blu-ray here in the States, and you should TOTALLY buy it. It's crazy good.
