R2D2 and C3PO had a big impact on my life. Ever since first being introduced to the Star Wars universe I've wanted a droid of my own. One that would take out the trash, do the laundry, open futuristic doors and so on. While that may still be a distant dream, Romo is the first step in the right direction. All he needs in order to spring to life is the smartphone you carry around all day.
Romo is basically a robotic dock for your smartphone. Depending on which app you run while he's plugged in, he'll perform different actions. The great part is that it doesn't plug in through an Apple dock connector or any proprietary connection. Instead, Romo utilizes the standard headphone jack, making it compatible with any iOS or Android smartphone.
The robotic charmer may still be young, but thanks to the open platform and the fact that anyone can make an app, he/she/it is learning very quickly. The basic Romo app will let you control your robo-buddy with a secondary device, turning it into a spybot that streams video straight to you. It can also turn Romo into a robot with a mind all its own, going about its business by exploring your home or office. If you turn on some music; Romo may even bust a move. And a new Android app lets you draw a route for it to follow.
If you want to turn your smartphone or iPod into a lovable robot, head over to Romotive.com and pick one up for $149. There's quite a few color options available, so choose wisely!
