There's nothing too brain-bendingly intellectual on this week's new-manga list, just a solid lineup of shonen and shoujo stories with enough lovin' and fightin' to take our minds off the mosquitoes and the heat.
Seven Seas launches two new series this week. I Don't Like You At All, Big Brother is one of those titles that makes some folks roll their eyes and go "Oh, Japan," and but the siblings in this story are adopted, so it's really about two young people who live in close proximity to one another having an unequal romance (because the big brother in this case is being pursued by not one but two other girls). This is being published in two-volume omnibus editions. Vol. 1 of Lizzie Newton: Victorian Mysteries is, as the title says, a mystery series set in Victorian times. Lizzie is an upper-class young lady who is more interested in solving a murder than paying attention to her fiance; add in the Japanese love of Victorian frills, and we have all the ingredients for an enjoyable summer read. Seven Seas has one more new title this week: Vol. 5 of A Certain Scientific Railgun.
From Vertical, we have three new volumes in ongoing series: Vol. 2 of Flowers of Evil, vol. 4 of GTO: 14 Days in Shonan, and vol. 13 of GTO: The Early Years. I haven't gotten started on Flowers of Evil yet but it looks like a good read—it's a crush-gone-wrong story with a literary twist. GTO: 14 Days in Shonan is just plain fun, so I'm saving that for a lazy day.
Viz kicks off the month with a solid lineup of Shonen Jump and Shojo Beat titles that should keep summer-vacation boredom at bay. Even better, they are having a 20% off sale on their digital manga right now, bringing the price of most volumes down to $3.99, through August 20, so this is a great time to do some catching up.
The Shonen Jump list kicks off with vols. 44 and 45 of Bleach, and for Ohba-Obata fans, there's vol. 13 of Bakuman; the series has already wound up in Japan and in Shonen Jump Alpha, but print readers have seven volumes left to go (or as I prefer to think of it, seven volumes left to enjoy). Yokai fans get a treat with vol. 10 of Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan; this is one of those series you don't hear much about, but it's pretty solid and a good summer read. Vol. 23 of Slam Dunk brings the basketball action, and the list winds up with vol. 10 of Tegami Bachi, vol. 11 of Toriko, vol. 7 of Ultimo, and vol. 9 of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX.
Shoujo fans, Viz has not forgotten you! My pick of the week would definitely be vol. 4 of A Devil and Her Love Song, because it has all the shoujo stuff you love (romance, introspection) but freshens it up with a smart, acid-tongued heroine. The good-bad-girl parade continues with vol. 9 of Ai Ore! Also up this week: Vol. 5 of Dawn of the Arcana, vol. 17 of Haruka: Beyond the Stream of Time, vol. 10 of Kamisama Kiss, vol. 20 of Kaze Hikaru, and vol. 16 of La Corda d'Oro.
