By the time you read this article, there's a good chance a Tesla Museum could be well on its way to being fully funded. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't hit up the latest ambitious crowd funding venture from The Oatmeal's Matthew Inman as soon, and as often as possible.
For those of you not up to speed, The Oatmeal recently posted a fantastic rundown of everything good and geeky about resurgent icon Nikola Tesla, titled "Why Nikola Tesla Was The Greatest Geek Who Ever Lived." The incredibly well researched and informative infographic has garnered over 578,000 likes on Facebook, 33,000 tweets, and in the biggest testament to its geekiness, 12,000 Plus Ones on Google Plus.
Then, two agains ago, Inman threw down the electrified gauntlet: Tesla's laboratory in Shoreham, New York is currently up for sale, and Inman is going to buy it, with the world's help. Okay, that's not entirely accurate. Inman has set up a crowd funding site through Indiegogo to raise 50% of the funds needed to purchase the location, with the other 50% being matched by New York State to preserve the location as a historical site. From there, all funding will go to a 501(c) non-profit called The Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe. Guess what they're going to build?
Here's the craziest part, though not that crazy when you consider Inman's last try at IndieGogo led to him creating a pile of cash to mock a lawyer at a site that ripped off his material: in just two days, they've almost raised the full amount of the $850,000 goal. In fact, while I was typing this story, the number jumped from $500,000, to over $517,000. And no, it didn't take me too long to type this, you jerks.
Point being, if you want to support something that not only is uber-geeky, but also means future generations will be able to learn about one of the pioneers of science in a really cool museum, then get to donating. Or Edison'll get ya.
