Casino Royale director Martin Campbell will be in charge of bringing the story of a bunch of gritty space criminals knocking around the galaxy to Syfy as a possible 13-episode series.
Deadline is reporting that Syfy's agreed to a script-to-screen deal where they'll take a look at the script from Heroes writer Joe Pokaski and decide if they want to be in the space fugitive business. The last time they did, it was with Farscape*, and that turned out wonderfully.
The 1978 to 1981 series Blake's 7 shares a bit in common with Farscape following a group of escaped cons who roam the universe getting into tussles with all manner of alien and human foes. Longtime Doctor Who writer Terry Nation was behind the series which was part of the post Star Wars wave of sci-fi action series (hello Battlestar Galactica and Space 1999!). The titular Blake was a political dissident who used the show's iconic ship, the Liberator, to take it to the man, in this case, the oppressive Federation.
Here's hoping Syfy likes what they see in Pokaski's script and that they can figure out the right budget numbers to make this happen.
*Well, technically Stargate: Universe but they were less fugitives and more people stuck on a ship that was lost on the far side of the galaxy.
