Looks like with the last week of September, comics have finally gotten their groove back; or at least, there’s a LOT of comics being released this week… Kicking off with one of the most anticipated titles of the Fall, TALON #0. Spinning out of the highly successful “Court of Owls” storyline from Batman, this is the first new character from DC we’ve seen in a good long while, and one that actually has a short of sticking around. So, that’s exciting.
Also out from DC Comics, as they wrap up their Zero Month, are ALL-STAR WESTERN #0, and AQUAMAN #0. Both are origin stories, and both take a serious look at where their leads have come from, and where they’re going.
Over at Marvel, we’re having a hard time narrowing down our purchases, given a particularly huge week for the publisher. There’s ULTIMATE COMICS ULTIMATES #16, which (spoiler) finds Captain America becoming President of the United States. There’s INCREDIBLE HULK #14, tying up the Hulk vs. Doom storyline, which has been a ton of fun. And then there’s JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #644, continuing the superb “Everything Burns” storyline, probably the biggest story for Kid Loki ever.
There’s also some more under the radar titles, like the dimension tripping X-TREME X-MEN #4, the thief-y GAMBIT #3, and CAPTAIN MARVEL #4 depicting Carol Danvers time lost adventures in WWII. Oh, and INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #525, which brings the conflict between Tony Stark and the Mandarin to a full boil, after about fifty issues or so of teasing.
Then there’s Dark Horse, where, once again, we’re just going down the list and grabbing everything they’ve got. ANGEL & FAITH #14 is probably the best title you’re not reading right now, if the lack of applause at the Harvey Awards was any indication. Seriously, forget the licensed property, and the fact that you may not know anything about Buffy books: this is a superb comic everyone should be reading.
Okay, off the soapbox. Dark Horse also has the supremely silly AXE COP: PRESIDENT OF THE WORLD #3, the great all-ages original AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER: THE PROMISE PART 3, and THE GOON #42. All fantastic titles that should be on your pull list.
Image Comics also has a huge release week, led by HAPPY #1. Writer Grant Morrison has been talking a lot about leaving superhero comics, so here’s your chance to see if he’s got the stuff to keep going without the capes. We’re going to guess “yes.” Meanwhile, SKULLKICKERS #18 is another delightful anthology of tales from the world of Skullkickers; DANCER #5 picks up on a humongous cliffhanger; and DEBRIS #3 is the best book set in a garbage dump all year, at least until Great Pacific premieres.
Oni Press has the landmark SIXTH GUN #25, while BOOM! has ADVENTURE TIME #8, and STEED AND MRS PEEL #1. As for the latter, whatever you think is going to happen in that book? You’ve got no clue. We got a sneak at the first issue, and it’s insane. Don’t miss it.
And that’s it! We’ll probably be reading all these books straight through to next Wednesday, so see you then!
