None of these guys and gals are going to be joining Wolverine in his new movie ('cept maybe Jean Grey)
Now, this is a very interesting way to do the new "Wolverine" film -- as reported by MTV Splashpage, the character will be sans X-Men, sans usual cast of characters. Splashpage quotes "The Wolverine" director James Mangold from Empire magazine:
"Where this film sits in the universe of the films is after them all...Jean Grey is gone, most of the X-Men are disbanded or gone, so there’s a tremendous sense of isolation for him."
Yet Famke Janssen is rumored to be in the film -- so one would suppose Grey (who Logan mercy-killed in "X-Men: The Last Stand") will make an appearance. As a ghost, of sorts...or a "demon" of the long-lived character's past. One can only imagine how many other such phantoms from his past an isolated Wolverine might encounter in this movie - Professor X, Cyclops, Stryker, etc.
But what I really like about this whole concept is that it showcases who Logan is, at his core, without the need of the strings and occasional straitjackets of continuity. As Mangold says in Empire:
"I wanted to be able to tell the story without the burden of handing it off to a film that already exists and having to conform to it. The ideas of immortality reign very heavily in this story and the burden of immortality weighs heavily on Logan. For me that’s such an interesting part of Logan’s character that is nearly impossible to explore if you have a kind of league or team movie."
"The Wolverine" is essentially a samurai-styled noir with a "superhero" lead -- like some of the best Wolverine solo stories (including the MAX one-shots). But will movie-goers accept a Wolverine without any X-Men trappings?
Check out the "Wolverine MAX" stuff for some idea of how "The Wolverine" might be like!
Well, Chris Nolan sort of did this with the "Dark Knight" movies...
Gosh, with this and the new Iron Man it's gonna be a dark and gritty coupla years for superhero films...maybe they need some Doop and Jubilee as comedy relief!
