After 2012 saw the Shout! Factory imprint bringing "Halloween III" and "The Funhouse" to gorgeous Blu-rays, Scream Factory has picked up six new titles for 2013 from Tobe Hooper, John Carpenter, Joe Dante, and John Romero that horror fans should be excited about.
The six titles are "Lifeforce," "The Fog," "The Howling," "The Burning," "Night of the Comet," and "Day of the Dead," several of which were previously MGM titles, with "Day of the Dead" originally getting released through Universal, later getting stacked and packed home video releases from Anchor Bay and UK outfit Arrow Video for Europe. While none of these titles are strangers to home video releases, if their record holds, Scream Factory is certain to give each one a nice visual polish and hopefully some great special features.
While hi-def Dante via his werewolf classic "The Howling" (1981) would be cause for celebration for most horror fans, I have to admit to being a little more excited about the Tobe Hooper 1985 sci-fi vampire oddity "Lifeforce" getting a re-release next year. That film involved, among other things, naked vampires from space coming down to Earth to suck out or vital lifeforce and Sir Patrick Stewart briefly being possessed by a pretty lady. "The Fog" (1980) saw Carpenter getting supernatural with ghostly lepers plaguing a seaside community, "The Burning" (1981) was another in many gory slashers featuring the effects of Tom Savini, while "Night of the Comet" was the other mall culture zombie movie and "Day of the Dead" should really serve as the true end to Romero's zombie opus.
A Shout! Factory rep told me this morning that the Dread Central piece shouldn't be taken as the official announcement, but we'll be on the lookout for what kinds of features and specs these movies will get in 2013.
