Warner Bros., I'm making a personal appeal to you to look beyond the failures of the 2004 movie loosely based on the DC Comics character Catwoman, and get a "Dark Knight Rises" spinoff movie starring Anne Hathaway going stat!
"I actually, it’s so embarrassing, I was at a press Q & A thing the other night for a screening of ‘The Dark Knight,’ and the moderator asked me, ‘So what was it like to say goodbye to the character?’ And I burst into tears, because I miss her. It just makes me cry. I miss her. I love Selina so much and I love her presence in my life..."
Is there any more to think about here, Warner Bros.? What better way to extend the "Dark Knight" movie franchise than to do a "Catwoman" movie starring the talented Ms. Hathaway? This is what's known in the biz as "low-hanging fruit" -- a sure win! Plus, Hathaway isn't even saying this stuff because she's desperate for another movie -- she can write her ticket in Hollywood. She wants to do a spinoff simply because she loves playing Selina Kyle.
Halle Berry in 2004's "Catwoman"
Now, I anticipate the argument against a new Catwoman movie -- surely, the last few superhero movie vehicles featuring females have been (if you excuse the term ) busts. In addition to 2004's "Catwoman" there was "Elektra," "Barb Wire," Supergirl"...but the fact that I have to reach into the mid-1980s for examples of female superhero movies points to another issue. Not enough movies starring superheroines to begin with.
But wasn't Katniss from "Hunger Games" sort of like a superheroine? Or The Bride in "Kill Bill"? I think the key here is the right concept with the right actress. Certainly, there was so much potential with performances like Michelle Pfeiffer in "Batman Returns," Chloe Moretz in "Kick Ass," Scarlett Johansson in "The Avengers," and Katniss herself Jennifer Lawrence in "X-Men First Class". These actresses -- and even Halle Berry in the "X-Men" movies -- prove that women can play awesome cinematic supeheroes and supervillains.
In short -- making a Catwoman movie starring Anne Hathaway is an awesome idea. It's the perfect thing to squeeze between "Man of Steel" and "Justice League."
Let's do it.
