Things going into brains and coming out of brains--that's what you have to look forward to in March. A pair of 80's offbeat horror classics will be hitting DVD and Blu-ray in March from Scream Factory.
First up, March 5th brings "John Dies At the End" and "Bubba Ho-Tep" director Don Coscarelli's "Phantasm II" to DVD and Blu-ray. That 1988 film reunites Coscerelli with "Phantasm" actors Reggie Bannister and Angus Scrimm with "Point Break" actor James LeGros temporarily replacing A. Michael Baldwin as Mike, the poor guy who finds himself inexorably connected to and at odds with the bodysnatching Tall Man. The sequel sees Mike and Reggie hitting the road to find and stop the Tall Man, who's slowly using his pint-sized minions and silver balls to kill and convert the populations of America's heartland into tiny, robe-wearing murderers. While it's a very, very conscious nod to Raimi's "Evil Dead" pictures, "Phantasm II" works well on its own with a mix of excellent effects work and yet another great performance from Scrimm.
If that's not offbeat enough for you, then March 26th brings Stuart Gordon's riff on Lovecraft, 1986's "From Beyond" on a DVD/Blu-ray combo. Gordon is joined by his "Re-Animator" star Jeffrey Combs in a tale of perception science gone wrong and the strange things that cross over when you mess around with the pineal gland.
Scream Factory hasn't announced what features will make their way over to the the discs, but will reveal more details as they become available. The publisher is offering a pre-order bonus for both films for early orders. Each film will have its own 18”x24” poster of the new artwork included with the initial round of pre-orders--300 for "From Beyond" and 500 for "Phantasm II," so if you want one, you'd better head over to the Shout! Factory site pretty quickly to snag one.
