"One-click shopping" just got redefined for comiXology users.
The digital comics service announced today the launch of two new ways to shop for titles: subscription and bundles services. Fans can subscribe to their monthly titles of choice without skipping or forgetting an issue, all at the click of a "subscribe" button. The bundles, meanwhile, "allow comiXology fans to buy curated collections — be it entire series, or multi-issue events — at steep discounts and all at a click of a button," according to a press release.
“Every hour of every day, everyone at comiXology is thinking about how to make it easier for comiXology fans to get the comics they love,” said comiXology co-founder and CEO David Steinberger in announcing the news. “With subscriptions and bundles we’ve taken yet another step in delivering the great experience that our users deserve.”
ComiXology's debut bundles include several starter packages from publishers including Archaia, Marvel, MonkeyBrain and more. There are more specified bundles as well, including Image's "Chew" Bundle, collecting six volumes of John Layman and Rob Guillory's food-detective series for $39.99 (a 19% discount, according to the site), and IDW's Joe Hill Sampler, collecting volume one of "Locke & Key," as well as "The Cape" and "Road Rage."
The subscription service is certainly welcome news for casual readers wanting to stay connected to monthly titles without having to stay completely on top of release date information. The discounted bundles, meanwhile, are a clean, organized way to get readers up to speed on new events and new publishers they're unfamiliar with — though it's still a lot to ask a new reader to drop thirty bucks on, say, Valiant's deal, without getting a few cheaper, solo titles under their belt, first.
While I don't see myself investing in any of these bundles just yet, it's still a great step forward for getting more shopping options into potential comics readers' hands. And I can tell you I've already clicked "subscribe" on "Hawkeye" — so I count the day's news as a big win.
