All eyes are on San Diego Comic-Con this week as creators and fans from all over the world converge on the San Diego Convention Center for Comic-Con. Here's a look at what to expect, as well as a glance at this week's new manga releases.
Yen Press is giving away "Doubt" masks at their booth
Conventional wisdom: Most of the big manga publishers are on the scene in San Diego, but with the flurry of significant announcements at Anime Expo, there may not be much left to say. Viz Media, Kodansha Comics, Yen Press, Vertical, Udon, and Seven Seas either have booths or panels on the floor, and Archaia Entertainment will hold a special panel on Shotaro Ishinomori and his classic manga "Cyborg 009," which writers F. J. DeSanto and Bradley Cramp and artist Marcus To are re-imagining as a new original graphic novel. Dark Horse has brought in "Lone Wolf and Cub" creator Kazuo Koike as a guest of the show; he will be doing interviews with the press. In addition, there will be panels on Korean comics and animation, "Making a Living in Manga," "Best and Worst Manga of the Year," and "Beyond the Valley of Tezuka: Manga Legends You Don't Know But Should Know," and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund will present a "Defending Manga" panel about the history of manga and the legal issues that have been raised over the years. The "Shonen Jump" team will be recording their weekly podcast live at the show. Watch this space for a complete news roundup early next week. (Photo by Deb Aoki.)
New releases: This week brings vol. 12 of "Sailor Moon," the final volume in the series, although they also have two volumes of short stories in the works. For now, though, creator Naoko Takeuchi wraps up all the story threads and sends Usagi and the Sailor Guardians off on their way. If that's not enough for you, they also have vol. 4 of Ema Toyama's "Missions of Love" this week.
Dark Horse has a treat for CLAMP fans: Vol. 4 of their supernatural historical fantasy story "Gate 7."
Viz has a new volume of "07-Ghost" and the final volume of the slacker manga "I'll Give It My All... Tomorrow" on deck this week. Vertical is releasing vol. 6 of the creepy high school romantic comedy "The Flowers of Evil," in which a stolen gym outfit is the catalyst for a descent into Baudelarian madness. Seven Seas finishes out "Gunslinger Girl" with vol. 7 of their omnibus editions, and they also have the third volume of "Mayo Chiki!" and the third omnibus volume of "I Don't Like You At All, Big Brother" this week.
