In theory, you'd imagine that a DVD called the "Slack Pack" would be one of those themed releases: you know, slacker-themed stories featuring the lead character of the show in question. In practice, though, you could grab nearly any handful of episodes from J.G. Quintel's Cartoon Network series Regular Show's three seasons and come up with a reasonable argument that it too would be a "Slack Pack." If the show's leads—know-it-all bluejay Mordecai and prickly, occasionally live wire raccoon Rigby—didn't slack off, they wouldn't do anything at all.

Semantics of the title aside (it's accurate, I guess), the "Slack Pack" assembles 12 typically surreal, frenetic, loud, silly, and generally very on-point-about-being-lazy-and-20 episodes of Regular Show.

Hey, do you know who's incredible? Mark Hamill. Seriously, you'd never guess that the sometime-Joker would be able to reach such weirdly deep registers to play the mystical albino gorilla Skips, Moredcai and Rigby's co-worker at the park. It's not fair to single out Hamill: the rest of the voice cast of the series is top-notch, from Quintel's performance as Mordecai to the weird, excessive energy of William Salyers as Rigby; Sam Marin does triple duty as Pops, Benson, and Muscle Man. Among the many things (good and bad) that the fourth season of Torchwood gives us across the ten episodes that comprise the Miracle Day arc, there's a global crisis involving a sudden outbreak of immortality across the globe, arguments for national healthcare (I think), wrong-footed allusions to the Holocaust, and Bill Pullman as some kind of alpha child killer and sexual predator. Miracle Day starts with a killer sci-fi premise that devolves into a mishmash of elements, couched inside of on-the-nose political arguments played out by characters that really should be cleverer than they behave.

It doesn't all go wrong, though—Miracle Day does have a stellar premise that gives the first few episodes tremendous momentum, even if the resolution to the mystery of global, disastrous immortality leaves a lot to be desired.

I don't think it would take a lot of work to make the argument that right now the two pillars of Cartoon Network's evening programming are Adventure Time and The Regular Show. Both series have earned their reps for their respective creators' willingness to dig deep into the surreal, going all over the map with their 11-minute comic opuses while still creating strange, funny, and interesting worlds and characters.

J.G. Quintel is the mind behind The Regular Show. A CalArts grad and Cartoon Network veteran, he and I spoke recently by phone about the genesis of the series, and the winding path that got him and his animal leads Mordecai and Rigby, onto Cartoon Network.
