Lords of Waterdeep

In the last few years, gaming behemoth Wizards of the Coast has expanded its "Dungeons and Dragons" product line with several board games. Last year's "Lords of Waterdeep" drew critical praise and awards for its drafting and questing mechanics. Recently, Wizards released "Scoundrels of Skullport", the first expansion for "Waterdeep." How was the original game created? And how challenging was it to expand upon it? We talked to game designer Rodney Thompson.



The latest set for the venerable card game "Magic: The Gathering" will be released September 27. Titled "Theros", this set takes place in a plane with the feel of Greek Mythology and interesting new mechanics that capture the flavor and heroics of myth.



Jonathan Tweet and Rob Heinsoo helped create the last few editions of venerable roleplaying game "Dungeons and Dragons." And now they have authored their own fantasy RPG, "13th Age." We spoke to them about how their created the game and its emphasis on storytelling.

Brothers Matt and Brian James have created an original game with "Red Aegis," combining the adventure of an RPG like "Dungeons and Dragons" with the worldbuilding of a strategy game like "Civilization."



In the hobby gaming industry, it caused something of a ruckus, a promising Kickstarter project for a board game was canceled after long delays, despite being successfully funded. "The Doom That Came To Atlantic City" has become a cautionary tale for board games on Kickstarter and those who want to enter the industry.



Wizards of the Coast released additional details about their year-long event "The Sundering." The company is focusing on their fantasy world Forgotten Realms, a setting for Dungeons and Dragons, with a mix of novels, games, and more. "During the Sundering, powerful forces both mortal and divine are being set in motion and D&D fans all over the world are being given the opportunity to take part in this epic event to help shape the fate of the Forgotten Realms forever," said Laura Tommervik, Brand Marketing Manager for D&D.

Over 1,000 board game fans are squealing with delight today as canceled Cthulhu-meets-Monopoly board game "The Doom That Came To Atlantic City" was reborn. After the publisher of the game canceled the board game, the game's designers moved to return it from the dead.

Monte Cook has been designing roleplaying games for over 20 years, including Dungeons and Dragons third edition, and games he published through his own company, Arcana Unearthed and Ptolus.

On August 1, he will be releasing the PDF of his new game, Numenera. The print books will follow on August 14. The science fantasy RPG raised over $500,000 on Kickstarter, as well as a whole community of supporters.

Monte Cook has been a roleplaying game designer for over 20 years and is best known for working on the Planescape setting for Dungeons and Dragons, being one of the designers of Dungeons and Dragons third edition, and a variety of games such as Arcana Unearthed and Ptolus that he self-published through his company Malhovac.

After a hiatus for several years, he has returned to game design. Numenera is an original game and unique setting with the tendency toward the strange. The game will be released as a PDF on August 1, with the printed book to follow on August 14.

Watch: Magic the Gathering at San Diego Comic-Con

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of collectible card game "Magic: The Gathering," publisher Wizards of the Coast will be releasing a boxset called From The Vault: Twenty. It features 20 well-regarded cards from the game's past that were used in tournament-winning decks.

USAopoly, the company that licenses "Monopoly" from Hasbro, has worked with Activision to launch "Skylanders Monopoly." "Skylanders" has become one of the biggest franchises in the video game industry, with over $1 Billion in revenue and over 100 million toys sold. The game is famous for its model of toys that come to life in the video game.



Thursday, July 11, Catalyst Game Labs will publish the digital version of "Shadowrun" fifth edition, with printed books coming to stores sometime in August. Jason Hardy, Shadowrun's Line Developer, said, "We worked to make this version of the rules approachable to newcomers as well as robust for veterans, so I hope the game appeals to anyone who is intrigued by the possibilities the setting presents." Hardy has managed the creation of "Shadowrun" books for four years, including the development of the new edition.


Catan big news

Mayfair Games, publishers of the massively successful "Settlers of Catan" board game, have announced that at Gen Con in August they will be holding a game of "Catan" with 1000 players. Billing it "The Big Game", the company is pursuing the record for most people at once playing a board game. There will be judges from the Guinness Book of World Records on hand to witness the event. That will be a lot wood-for-sheep trades.



Recently, Monte Cook hired his friend Charles Ryan to join Monte Cook Games as Chief Operating Officer to help launch the science fantasy roleplaying game "Numenera" later this summer. Ryan has been working in the RPG industry for 20 years, including a stint as the brand manager for Dungeons and Dragons third edition. MTV Geek talked to Ryan about his relationship with Monte, what he brings to Monte Cook Games, and the future of "Numenera."

Wizards of the Coast has revealed to MTV Geek that at Hasbro ToyShop in San Diego Comic-Con they will be offering a limited edition collection of "Magic: The Gathering" 2014's Planeswalker cards. The five cards will be presented with unique black-on-black art by Steve Prescott, variants of those found in the core Magic 2014 set.
