The cover of "Earth Two" #3, featuring Alan Scott

Since Kapow Con this weekend, the Internet has been ablaze with rumors concerning the "coming out" of a major DC Comics superhero. Hints were dropped by DC Co-Publisher Dan DiDio about the possible storyline, and Courtney Simmons DC's senior vice-president of publicity, confirmed to ABC News that "One of the major iconic DC characters will reveal that he is gay in a storyline in June."

We've heard a rumor about who exactly this character is, (as well as what issue this storyline is going to drop)...and he is definitely major and iconic.

A little birdie told us it might be Alan Scott, and the issue Earth Two #2, hitting stands June 6th. This has not been confirmed by DC, who has issued a "no comment," and it is only a rumor.

Scott was the original "Golden Age" Green Lantern, who had many modern adventures as part of the Justice Society. With the New 52 reboot, a new Scott was recently introduced in the Earth Two series: a young and dynamic head of business in the Tony Stark mold. If DC was to "start fresh" with a new Scott/Earth Two G.L., his sexual orientation would be an organic part of his character from the start -- quieting critics who might accuse DC of "shoehorning" the storyline to a character previously identified as "straight." Just a few intriguing bits of "Before Watchmen" news coming out of  London's Kapow! Con this weekend:

At DC's "Before Watchmen" panel this weekend, Co-Publisher Dan DiDio announced that legendary comic book artist Steranko will be drawing the first "Rorschach" variant cover. "To say that we're excited would be an understatement, to say that we're nervous would also be an understatement, but we're gonna let the work speak for itself."

Steranko's career in comics has been marked by ground-breaking art on books like "Captain America" and "Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D." Incorporating fine art styles such as surrealism and collage, his work has had a major influence on the aesthetics of the comic book medium. Read More...

Several months ago, DC Comics invited us to travel up Broadway and get our very first look at "Before Watchmen." Placed in my hands was the "Green Book,"  the binder that collected -- in various stages of production -- the latest covers and interior pages as they came in. While not as comprehensive as reading the actual issues, viewing the collection of art and words provided me with a certain baseline as to the quality and content of the "Before Watchmen" collection of miniseries. Now that the official press embargo has lifted on "first impression" pieces, I am free to give you mine.

DC has had a policy of holding back on releasing to the public any "Before Watchmen" interior pages prior to publication -- but I think if they had provided such previews, they would have put the lie to the idea floated around portions of the comics media that the project is nothing more than a cheap cash grab. You can't have something with the high level of artistic achievement as evidenced in those pages and call it "cheap." The work that I saw in that Green Book was, quite frankly, some of the best the individual artists have done in their entire careers. Read More...

Geoff Johns and Jim Lee Discuss Vol. 2 of Justice League

MTV Geek got a chance to catch up with Justice League creative team Geoff Johns and Jim Lee while they were in town to sign copies of the recent hardcover collection -- and they teased a bunch of upcoming developments in the DC Universe you're going to want to know about! In the above clip, Johns talks about a new Green Lantern who will be appearing in  Justice League soon...

"You're going to see in the coming year for Justice League new members;  you'll see characters like Shazam, Element Woman, and a new Green Lantern that was first teased back in New Comic Book Day. And we'll see more of him in the Green Lantern comic books very very soon." Read More...

Did "Community" creator/showrunner Dan Harmon secretly telegraph the latest developments concerning the fate of the series episodes ago?

Just as Chang hijacked Greendale and replaced Dean Pelton with lookalike "Not Dean Pelton," it is possible that NBC might replace Harmon on the show next season. During a Upfronts conference call yesterday, NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt told reporters: “I expect Dan’s voice to be a part of this show somehow. I’m just not sure if that means him running it day-to-day or consulting on it.”

I can't even imagine how a "Community" without Harmon in the driver's seat would look and feel like. Thankfully, now that the show has been moved to the ever-popular "Friday Night Of Doom" -- with "Whitney," of all shows, as its lead-in -- we may never have to suffer through a botched season, albeit truncated, for that long. A recent discovery of ancient Mayan astronomical tables in Xultun, Guatemala has apparently made mainstream archeologists do this to 2012 apocalypse conspiracy theorists:

Found in a unassuming sub-surface structure by Boston University archaeologist William Saturno and his team of researchers was, among other things, the oldest known Mayan calendar ever discovered. Drawn upon a wall of the structure was a series of bars and dots that indicated the world would continue way past 2012. Way, way, waaaaaay past 2012. Read More...

Oh, *Science* with your cute way of facilitating dystopic end-games for mankind that was once only the realm of sci-fi! The human overseers of Miami's Jungle Island are now providing their orangutans with iPads in order to communicate better. Strangely, the primates have quickly taken to the Apple products, displaying a high level of intelligence never-before witnessed. Strange, perhaps, but not surprising to this guy:

Using software originally designed for humans with autism, the iPads give the animals another avenue of communication in addition to sign-language. The screen displays various images, and the orangutans can press the appropriate button to answer simple questions...even give accurate health reports so their trainers can take better care of them! And it has been observed that the younger orangutans are much more interested in the devices than their older counterparts (who, we would assume, have stuck with their PCs and swear by them).

Great news for Seth McFarlane fans: forward-thinking Fox has picked up both Family Guy and American Dad for their 11th and 8th seasons, respectively, bringing them solidly into the 2013-14 season. But according to Hollywood Reporter, there is no word yet on the fate of Family Guy spin-off The Cleveland Show beyond next year's fourth season.

Personally, I was surprised by the American Dad renewal; not because I don't love the show, but because I don't think it's ever been the sort of ratings and merchandising juggernaut Family Guy has been. Did it all boil down to a choice for Fox between American Dad and Cleveland Show? With a recent third-season renewal for Bob's Burgers and new cartoons on the Animation Domination horizon like Axe-Cop, did Fox just have to make more room? 'Cause Simpsons ain't going nowhere. Today I'll be reviewing two new comics from IDW hitting stands this Wednesday: Frankenstein Alive, Alive! #1 and Trio #1.

Steve Niles and Bernie Wrightson's Frankenstein Alive, Alive! is a must-read for any fan of the old Marvel horror comics and Creepy magazines. It's as atmospheric and gloomy as hell (you can almost smell the mist and gently rotted flesh), but paradoxically also carries a great deal of hope -- for this time around, the Monster has found a home, a job, and friends. Working at a circus freakshow, he has scored the monster movie equivalent of a comfortable civil service job. But will things remain so relatively peaceful for the creature? Read More...

Acclaimed comic creators James Asmus and Phil Noto are on board to bring the adventures of SpyGal to life.

It's not quite the Darkest Timeline, though maybe it's not the most ideal one either: Deadline reports that NBC's Community is likely to get a fourth "abbreviated" season. The cult TV show would join fellow programs Parks & Recreation and 30 Rock with renewals and shorter seasons.

No no no, Community fans, this is not the time to do do a mass Troy-freakout. Focus on the good here: there might be more episodes of your favorite show! There is no mention in the Deadline piece that this will be the final season of Community, as they said is most likely to be the case with 30 Rock. I'm okay with the show simply getting some sort of fourth season, if only to keep it going through the 4 years most of the study group would need to graduate (we aren't counting Pierce's prolific 13 years as a student at Greendale, obvs). They could even do the graduation as a movie-length special in addition to the episode order. Read More...

With solid story and art -- as well as slick packaging -- Valiant's X-O Manowar is poised to be that midway comic between the Big Two and the independents that might grab fans from both. The first issue features a smartly-designed infographic (!) in the inside front cover to set the historical tone, and the battle between the Visigoths and the Romans that opens the story is both convincing and swiftly paced. How do we get to a highly-developed suit of armor in the middle of 402 AD? Spoilers!

I could position this review for readers familiar with the long history of Valiant Comics, that unique publisher that launched in 1989, went on to produce such memorable comics as Magnus Robot Fighter, Shadowman, Archer & Armstrong, and the aforementioned X-O, and had several sea-changes as the company fell into different hands. But as loyal as that fanbase is, I don't think they alone are going to be enough to put this current run of "rebooted" titles to the top of the charts.*

And I don't think the new Valiant thinks that way either. Instead of resting on the laurels of an older brand, advanced quality is evidenced in everything about X-O Manowar #1: such as the writing, art, coloring, even the trade-dress and logo (thanks to noted designer Rian Hughes). But that's the sort of high bar set for talent that was the calling-card of most of the previous Valiant incarnations, and what provided them with the conceit goal of being the publisher closest to becoming Number Three to the Big Two. Lately there's been a lot of Shia LaBeouf  coverage in Geek circles, for reasons that do not include either Transformers or that Indiana Jones movie with the refrigerator. The reason: his surprise appearance at last weekend's C2E2, hawking copies of his self-made comics at Artist's Alley. A good portion of that coverage ranges from somewhat skeptical to outright MEAN, ripping apart his comics page-by-page and basically castigating him for ever having the "nerve" to want to make his own stuff.

Well I don't know of a better way to spread awareness and appreciation of our favorite artistic medium than to kick celebrities who dare enter that arena in the teeth, do you? Certainly, the sight of the (at least in Geek circles) controversial LaBeouf at a comic-con table is going to raise a few eyebrows. He's been attached to two movie franchises that have sparked a lot of heated fan debate, and worse...he's talking about expressing his deepest thoughts and feelings through comics! Horrors! "Leave our comics alone! Pick another form of personal self-expression, like, like ska or something! How dare this rich so-and-so pretend to be a real comic creator!" Read More...
