MTV Geek debuted on October 4, 2010 with a video introduction by none other than Stan Lee:

It has been my pleasure to, as Stan says in the video, "enjoy the ride" with MTV Geek for most of its two years. During that time we have put out a massive amount of original content that I'm really proud of, and which I feel has helped redefine what a "geek culture" website can be.

It's beginning to feel a lot like the late '90s in here. If you're not already familiar with the deck-building card game concept, you will be soon, as it is growing with a pace not seen since collectible card games took over hobby stores some 15 years ago. Now the heroes and villains of Marvel comics will be starring in their own deck-building card game come November, when Upper Deck publishes Marvel: Legendary.

NECA Toys has recently been doing the work of Aperture Laboratories with the release of their 1:1 scale Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device prop replica. Because getting your butt kicked in the Battle of the Blackwater just once is not nearly enough, Game of Thrones fans will soon be able to take the reigns of House Baratheon and re-create the epic conflict again and again. Perhaps they'll even have a chance to write their own ending to the conflict between Baratheon and Lannister, or better yet, stage a fan fiction-esque battle of Baratheon versus Stark.

All of the above are possible with the Battles of Westeros tactical board game system from Fantasy Flight Games, which is about to receive its first major addition in the form of a House Baratheon Army Expansion. Game of Thrones may not be returning to HBO until March 31st, but with the luck of the dice and a skin of hot mulled wine, you just might yet survive the winter.

"The most beautiful computer we’ve ever made" -- so said Apple CEO Tim Cook, rather modestly, about the new MacBook Pro unveiled at the World Wide Developer's Conference today. But with a crystal-clear Retina-display -- a first for Apple laptops -- and the lightest and thinnest construction ever for the MacBook Pro line, Cook's words were more than just PR hyperbole.

The next generation MacBook Pro, dubbed by Gizmodo as "the most amazing laptop we've ever seen," has a 15.4-inch screen with a stunning 2800 x 1800 resolution. Expect software updates to accomodate the higher resolution, with Final Cut Pro and Aperture getting upgrades.  The svelte device also weighs a measly 4.5 pounds and measures in at .71 inches -- and yet carries up to 768GB on its hard drive and rocks a quad-core of 2.7 GHz (thanks to Intel's super-  Bridge processors). Other goodies include two Thunderbolt ports, an HDMI port, a built-in SD card reader, USB 3.0, dual microphones and a quietly cooling internal fan. Not bad, if you have $2200 or so to spare on a laptop. Read More...

At last year's Gen Con, Star Trek: Fleet Captains from WizKids was one of the show's highlights. Featuring 24 sculpted ship figures, Fleet Captains let Trek fans conduct tabletop space battles between the Federation and Klingons using WizKid's popular HeroClix system.

Yet even though there is a large well of source material to pull from, fans of Star Trek: Fleet Captains have been unsure if the game would ever receive additional content. With a $100 price tag, it was no certainty that Fleet Captains would sell well enough to finance the release of another fleet, but those questions have now been answered. WizKids has announced the upcoming release of the Romulan Empire expansion.

What's a publisher to do when a once-popular title is replaced by a newer version, even though there is still some life left in the original? For Alderac Entertainment Group and their Thunderstone card game, the answer is simple: give the old version away. Starting today, Thunderstone is available as a free print-and-play downloadable card game.

Taking a tabletop game from store shelves to a free download could be as simple as uploading a few PDFs, but AEG chose to first make some upgrades to the set. The original Thunderstone has now been given a complete facelift. The card layout has been revised and new artwork added to help Thunderstone match the style of its successor, the newly released Thunderstone Advance.

"The original Thunderstone for us was a great success," AEG Senior Brand Manager Todd Rowland told me. "It was reprinted and sold out many times over (at least 6 from my recollection), and built a very large playerbase for the game. We thought it would be fun to give the player's a lot of added value to their new Thunderstone Advance game," Rowland explained.
