10. ALICE IN THE COUNTRY OF HEARTS by Quinrose and Soumei Hoshino - This quirky manga goes far beyond its roots in a dating-sim game. Quinrose takes the world of Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" as a starting point and fills it with engaging characters, some guileless, some menacing. This was hugely popular when Tokyopop published it a few years back, and Yen Press has picked it up in beautifully designed omnibus volumes that really do the story justice.

Imagine watching your favorite animated series as a child -- like, let's say, "Chip 'n Dale's Rescue Rangers" -- and suddenly Gadget had this really heavy revelation about her past that seemed to come out of nowhere and was something you'd more readily find on a adult TV drama. A "suit," a "Man in Black," a humorless guy working for the Feds or the CIA or some shadowy quasi-governmental organization -- these are not figures I think about when contemplating a "fan favorite" movie hero. MTV Geek is counting down the 10 Most OMG Moments Of Geek! #9 regards a certain pair of Green Lanterns...
Oftentimes, big entertainment companies are loathe to change their iconic heroes in any way -- even a hairstyle adjustment must go through a certain scrutiny by the "higher-ups." And then we have Green Lantern -- or, rather, Green Lanterns. You can have plenty of Green Lanterns, whereas you need to keep your Supermen and Robins down to a reasonable amount. In a move that would increase the diversity of their comic book lines (regardless of whether that move was incidental to the stories, calculated, or most likely a mix of the two), DC Comics in 2012 introduced two new Green Lanterns to the roster -- one gay, and one an Arab-American Muslim.
