Echoes #1

Everybody has secrets, and some are worse than others. And then some are way, way worse than that. That, in a nutshell, is the premise of Top Cow’s new mini-series Echoes at least at the outset – though I think it’ll go a little deeper and weirder as it continues.

The mostly unnamed protagonist of Joshua Hale Fialkov’s series is dealing with the birth of his first child, and the death of his father at the same time (I think, there’s a bit of jumping timelines going on). As his father passes away, he leaves one piece of information: find the box in the basement of Thirteen Thirty-Nine Haymaker, an abandoned old house outside of town. And if you guessed that he finds porn mags in the box, well, you’d be only partially right. Our hero’s search is a little complicated by the fact that he’s taking anti-psychotics, and what he finds in the house may be real, or it may be entirely in his head.

There’s a lot of set-up in this issue, and only a little bit of pay-off, which is okay (but not great) for the first issue of a five issue mini-series. The question, of course, is: is this enough to get you hooked? Maybe, and it depends almost entirely on what direction the creators go in. Read More...

Oops!...Bluewater Productions Did It Again -- with another comic book about a famous pop star, "Fame: Britney Spears." The solicitation copy for the comic, which hits stands in March, describes the story as follows:

"Britney Spears -- the most famous superstar of the 21st century. What does it take to reach those heights in the Internet Age? What are the hidden costs when every move makes the headlines? More than an entertainment powerhouse. More than a dancer and musician. Britney Spears is a survivor!"

Will the comic, written by CW Cooke and pencilled by Ricardo Jaime, cover Britney's days in the Mickey Mouse Club? The infamous head-shaving incident? Her triumphant comeback?

Waiting for "FAME: Chris Crocker."

In a world where every celebrity, pseudo-celebrity, and public figure seems to have their own comic book, is it any surprise that Glenn Beck would be next? Yep, Bluewater Productions is set to release their comic "Political Power: Glenn Beck" in February. Darren Davis, President of Bluewater, had this to say about Glenn Beck the comic book and the man:

"We try to focus on figures that bring out a lot of passion for our biographies. Glenn Beck certainly does that. Whether you like his politics or you find them reprehensible, you most certainly have an opinion about him. I'm sure a lot of readers will want to know how the Glenn Beck surge got its start. This comic will show them."

Bluewater's "Political Power" series, a spinoff of their "Female Force" line, features a number of prominent figures in U.S. history, including Ronald Reagan, Barack Obama, and Colin Powell. Placing Glenn Beck amongst such robust company would seem to suggest that the TV commentator and radio talkshow host holds quite a bit of "political power" -- or at least, a lot of controversy. But the comic promises to be more than a "best of" of Beck's famous/infamous career highlights: Read More...
