With the huge popularity of such gender-swapped characters as Adventure Time's Fionna and Prince Gumball, it was only a matter of time for the Archie gang to follow suit. August sees Riverdale turn into "Reversedale" as Archie, Betty, and Veronica gets to see how the other half lives thanks to Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Here's Archina, Ronnie, and Billy:

With C2E2 2012 winding down on its last day, that didn’t mean there wasn’t still room for a few big announcements from Marvel. A packed, standing room crowd filled the room at the publisher’s Next Big Thing Panel to reveal some new series, big crossovers, and more. Attending the panel were Director of Communications Arune Singh, Talent Director C.B. Cebulski, Editors Sana Amanat and Daniel Ketchum, and writers Dennis Hopeless, Kelly Sue Deconnick, James Asmus, and Cullen Bunn.

But that’s not what you’re here for, right? You’re here for the news! Big scoops! Etc, etc: Read More...

Matt Kindt is about to have a very busy year. Between the release of 3 STORY: SECRET FILES OF THE GIANT MAN this week, and MIND MGMT #1 in May, we'll be getting more from the writer/artist this year than probably any other year of his career. And that's not even taking into account his upcoming run on DC Comics FRANKENSTEIN: AGENT OF S.H.A.D.E., which also kicks off in a few months time. We chatted with Kindt over e-mail to find out more about these titles, as well whether he, himself, is in fact a spy:

MTV Geek: I know this one-shot is a collection of stories published a little while ago, so you might be a little removed from it, but what was it like to revisit 3-Story? It almost seems like these shorts are you looking back on the main story of the book a bit? Or maybe I’m reading too much into it…

Matt Kindt: Yeah -- it was interesting because I worked on the novel in a vacuum so these stories were all written after I'd gotten a ton of review and feedback and read everyone's interpretation of the novel and what the giant represented, etc. So in a way I was coming at the story from a different perspective. But it was fun. I tried to be careful not to refute interpretations of the book in any way. I know there were a few takes on the book where I was like 'uhh...not what I had in mind...' but I like those takes as much as what my real intention was. So I didn't want to cancel those out in any way. Read More...

If you like your humor dark, tinged with weirdness, and with an extreme focus on pigs and moose, Jhonen Vasquez is your man. From cult classic comic Johnny The Homicidal Maniac, to cult classic cartoon Invader Zim, Vasquez has cornered the market on insane maniacs who like to scream at people, and only occasionally do the right thing. A clearly appreciative group of fans packed his spotlight panel at C2E2 2012, and though it was light on news of any sort, there was spirited Q&A. Here’s some of our favorite bits, which mainly focused on what movies Vasquez had seen lately:

On The Hunger Games: “I don’t go to things because I want to see violence, I go to things because I want to see them handled well.” Read More...

One of the biggest panels at any Con for Marvel? Cup O’ Joe, which usually peppers a couple of big announcements, with a free form discussion with the company’s Chief Creative Officer, and a few of his amazing friends. This time around, C2E2 2012 welcomed Joe Quesada, as well as EIC Axel Alonso, Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb, Talent Director C.B. Cebulski, Director of Communications Arune Singh, and writers Jason Aaron, Dan Slott, and Rick Remender.

Before the panel started, Slott had fun with the audience, as one audience member tweeted, “I see @DanSlott talking on his phone at a panel,” which led Slott to quip that he should now tweet, “Now @DanSlott is talking about my tweet on a panel.” And then we wrote about it in a panel recap, which will later be tweeted out, and the cycle of reflexivity was complete.

Anyway, news: Read More...

So it’s come down to this: Avengers vs. X-Men vs. Chicago. The AvX panel at C2E2 2012 played to a packed crowd of fans eager to here what’s next with Marvel’s big event of the year, and to - of course - weigh in on who they think will win the comic book fight of the century. On the panel? Joe Quesada (CCO, Marvel), Axel Alonso (EIC), writer Jason Aaron (one of the architects behind AvX, and the guy who wrote the second issue), writer Rick Remender, and Talent Director C.B. Cebulski. They were joined halfway through the panel by artist Frank Cho... It was all moderated by Marvel’s Arune Singh, as per usual.

Singh kicked things off by asking who was with Avengers, and who was with X-Men, with Quesada joking that if you’re for the X-Men, “You’re not allowed to see the Avengers movie.” Then he welcomed a costumed Scarlet Spider, and a costumed Wolverine up on stage to read AvX: Versus #1, before getting into it. (Oh, and he gave a little plug for MTV Geek’s War Journals series, so that was nice... Looks like our intense glaring at the stage paid off).

First, the news, and a little bit of recap: Read More...

In July, Wolverine's arch-enemy Sabretooth comes back to life, from the team who killed him: writer Jeph Loeb, and artist Simone Bianchi. Okay, that's not exactly right... Sabretooth is already back, and causing trouble for Marvel's second hairiest mutant. But starting with Wolverine #310, we're going to find out just how the villain managed to escape from a rather graphic on-screen beheading, and what that means for Wolverine's future (hint: nothing good). To find out more, we chatted with Loeb about the book, why it's important to bring Sabretooth back, and why Romulus - the guy pulling the strings - may not, in fact, be the guy pulling the strings:

MTV Geek: Jeph, between this and Cable, you’re becoming the guy who brings characters back to life… I think what everyone wants to know is: are you some sort of dark wizard?

Jeph Loeb: I wish! Then I’d make it so I had more time! Actually I’ve been very lucky to tell these stories and work with such incredibly talented artists like Ed “Ed” McGuinness and Simone “Supremo” Bianchi! Read More...

For fans of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon’s classic Watchmen, the reaction to the news that DC Comics was planning a series of prequels titled Before Watchmen provoked shock, horror, derision, and then when the creative teams were announced... Well, a lot of more of the same, but also a fair amount of excitement, as well. At WonderCon, fans got their first chance to see some of the divisive project, and chat with the creators.

But here at C2E2 2012? The "DC All Access: Before Watchmen" was the big one, bringing most of the major creators - writers and artists - on stage to show off a look at the mini-series, as well as talk back to them about just what they thought about one of the biggest - if not the biggest - comic book event of 2012. Did the panel leave fans saying, “Hurm,” or... Well, we can’t really think of any positive catchphrases from Watchmen, but you get the drift.

Attending the panel were DC Co-Publisher Dan DiDio, Mark Chiarello, Will Dennis, writer Brian Azzarello, artist Lee Bermejo, artist Amanda Conner, artist Adam Hughes, writer J. Michael Straczynski, artist Joe Kubert, and writer Len Wein. Read More...

You had to see this coming, right? As announced yesterday at C2E2 2012, Marvel is launching a brand new ongoing Hawkeye series, sending the archer to the mean streets of New York, and taking the Young Avengers own Hawkeye – Kate Bishop – under his wing. The best part? The series reunites writer Matt Fraction and artist David Aja, from the fan favorite The Immortal Iron Fist series. We chatted with Fraction about the announcement, what it’s like to write the opposite of Iron Man, and how many issues he and Aja are committed to (hint: it’s a LOT):

MTV Geek: I’m curious about the tone of the book, as it almost seems to be taking Hawkeye in the opposite direction of where he is in both Secret Avengers and Avengers Assemble… Humanizing him, rather than making him into a leader or over-the-top superhero.

Matt Fraction: Could not BE more opposite, yeah. This is… what, like, HAWKEYE as Stephen J. Cannell show. Street level in a very real way. I want to tell stories about a guy that does good not because it's his job, but because it's what he has to do to get to sleep at night. And he's very excellently covered elsewhere in the Marvel U… These kinds of stories aren't, especially for Clint Barton.

Geek: You and David Aja are, of course, known for Immortal Iron Fist – and one of the fan-favorite aspects of that series was how you guys really expanded the mythology behind his powers. With Iron Man, you also opened up his world, adding new tech, new villains, and pushing him to the bleeding edge. Hawkeye, on the other hand, is just a guy. So how do you approach that, widening and expanding his world? Or is it more about a razor sharp focus on one dude with a bunch of arrows?

MF: Well, that's the book -- his history, his absolutely unique batch of experiences, his seedy upbringing and familiarity with the small-scale world of crime, evil, and wickedness that the big-budget blockbuster world of AVENGERS/etc. don't have the bandwidth for… So we'll be digging into what being raised by a bunch of carny thieves and criminals does to a guy. What Clint knows about Seedy would fill a phonebook. And we're going to be meeting a Clint that can weaponize anything -- he's more than just the arrow guy. Read More...

Good news, spider-fans: starting with issue seven of Marvel’s Scarlet Spider in July, acclaimed artist Khoi Pham joins writer Chris Yost as the new series artist, kicking off the second year of Kaine Parker’s brand new life. Along with that new life? A brand new set of dangers, villains, and allies in the form of… Evil oil corporation ROXXON? To find out more, we chatted with Pham and Yost about where we’ll see Kaine going, how he walks the villain/hero line, and just what’s up with that Scarlet Letter/Scarlet Spider crossover:

MTV Geek: Khoi, let’s kick it off with you... What’s it been like joining this title? And what’s your take on Scarlet Spider?

Khoi Pham: This is a great book with limitless upside, so I'm really stoked to see what I can do to make this book even better than it already is. It's going to be fun to further define and shape Scarlet Spider as a character and make him a force to be reckoned with in the Marvel Universe.

Geek: Chris, we know that you and Ryan Stegman went on a trip to Texas to scout out locations for the book when it launched... When are you going to invite Khoi to take a trip with you, already? What is he, chopped liver?

KP: Hold up, field trips? This gig just got even better.

Chris Yost: That's right, we're going to Mexico in preparation for Year 2. Marvel foots the bill for that, right?

Geek: Okay, so starting with issue seven, what kind of place is Kaine in? Both physically, and mentally?

CY: Kaine is getting settled in Houston. He's found himself helping or being helped by his new supporting cast, he's taking care of a girl named Aracely there, he's got a place to live... Read More...

The sheer irony of Alan Moore's continual and quite public angst over the upcoming "Watchmen" prequels is that each episode provides the comics in question more and more of a spotlight -- a level of schadenfreude that garners much mass-market interest in the fruits of an industry often relegated to a niche audience. Moore's in-depth interview with BBC's HARDtalk was no different, and while a number of topics were covered -- the "V for Vendetta"-inspired masks of Anonymous, the role of porn/erotica  in "The Lost Girls" -- the author's displeasure with "Before Watchmen" was thoroughly addressed.

My favorite Tumblr at the moment (having just replaced the no less excellent "Batman Running Away From S**t") is "Ron Sworschach" -- which combines lines of Rorschach's dialogue from "Watchmen" with images of Parks and Recreation's Ron Swanson, and vice-versa.

The mumbling objectivist vigilante and the meat-loving libertarian mesh surprisingly well, leaving me unable to exactly recall who uttered such classic lines as "You had me at meat tornado" and "Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum." Would love to see a Leslie Knope/Silk Spectre or Ben Wyatt/Nite Owl.

Here are a few of my favorites, definitely check this Tumblr out:

Like pepperoni on a Deep Dish Pizza, MTV Geek will be all over this year’s C2E2, the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo. The Con – now in its third year at Chi-Town’s McCormick Place – will host thousands of fans eager to meet and greet with some of the best in comics in entertainment, and the whole MTV Geek crew will be there to capture every minute of the excitement.

To give you guys a little background, C2E2 is produced by ReedPop, the company behind the enormous New York Comic-Con, PAX, and even the annual Star Wars Celebration. Though C2E2 started off pretty small in its first year, mostly as an experiment by ReedPop to feed the need for* a legitimate, fan friendly comic convention in the Chicago; in the second year, attendance grew exponentially, and the exhibitor expects that this year will all but sell out. Not too shabby for a three year old. Read More...
