'The Smurfs' Comics Go Digital With A Dedicated App!

The Smurfs animated series spurred Smurf-mania, tossing the lovable blue characters on everything from bed sheets to breakfast cereals, but the cartoon isn’t where they got their start. The Smurfs were in fact comic book characters long before they hit the small screen in 1981. Now Papercutz and comiXology are teaming up to remind us of their roots.

Digital Manga News: Vampire Hunter D Goes To Comixology, and the Digital Manga Guild

Word came from Digital Manga Publishing on Wednesday that they are putting Hideyuki Kikuchi's Vampire Hunter D on comiXology's digital storefront.

True to its name, Digital has always been a pioneer in digital manga, and Vampire Hunter D was actually one of the first manga to be available on iOS.

Back in the early days (what, two years ago?), Vampire Hunter D was released as single-issue apps for the iPhone/iPod Touch. Digital already offers it via the Kindle and a number of other digital alternatives, but putting it on comiXology does brings the book to a wider audience of dedicated comics readers, something that will happen more easily there than on Amazon, because comiXology is specifically pitched to comics readers. Most of Digital's line is yaoi manga, with a handful of shoujo and shonen titles, but Vampire Hunter D has strong crossover appeal for American comics readers, so this is a good choice for them.

On the flip side, this also increases the amount of manga available on comiXology. At the moment, the only other mainstream manga title they have is Hetalia: Axis Powers, which was published by Tokyopop. Like Vampire Hunter D, it is a series with a strong fan base, although it probably has less appeal for the Wednesday crowd. Read More...

'Japan Needs Heroes' Goes Digital With ComoiXology!

Japan Needs Heroes is a comic book started by Red Giant Entertainment as a way to raise money for Japan. A plethora of industry legends, including Stan Lee, have signed to provide uplifting stories for the book and all profits will go to the Japan Society who has set up a disaster relief fund to help the many victims.

In a wonderful show of support ComiXology has agreed to provide digital distribution to those who buy the print version of the book and people who donate as much as $5 so we can read it on our Apple or Android device.

“It was always part of the plan to allow as many people as possible to have a digital version of the book,” said Benny R. Powell, CEO of RGE. “We quickly realized, however, that as this project began picking up steam, we weren't equipped to try to deal with delivering the electronic versions by ourselves.
