MTVG-Brundage

As a lifelong fan of all things creative and comic bookish, I've always been fascinated by the dark corners of popular culture: the overlooked stories, the uncredited creators who defined generations of entertainment, the characters that become household names while the artists behind them languished in anonymity.  And over the last couple months, there've been a few books released that focus on particularly deserving subjects.  So this column is dedicated to discussing a trio of these volumes – three books that shine light on forgotten (or under-recognized) figures, and add invaluable perspective for any fan with an interest in understanding the landscape and history of mass media.

On August 16th, Universal Pictures' "Kick-Ass 2" will be in theaters-- shoving unrelenting amounts of dark comedy and vigilante violence into your eyeholes! As if that weren't enough to satiate fans of Mark Millar's superhero tale, NECA Toys has recently released Series 1 of their action figures based on the film... and now I'm gonna review them. For justice!

By Matt D. Wilson

Each week, Matt Wilson, co-host of the War Rocket Ajax podcast and author of the Supervillain Field Manual, examines a major comic news item and picks a few winners and one loser among the week's comic book releases.

I've never really subscribed to the old saying that any publicity is good publicity. Anthony Weiner's political career should be evidence enough of that. But some people...some people sure do know how polish up a PR turd. Nobody seems to be better at it than Mark Millar.

Tout le cine

Dolph Lundgren's a cop playing by his own rules who finds the rules have changed when an alien drug dealer attempts to rule the streets of Houston--at Christmas!

It's "Dark Angel," the 1990 riff on buddy cop films, "Terminator," "Predator" which is coming to Blu-ray later this month from Shout! Factory in a pretty spiffy disc.

swamp-thing-1982

The 1980s started strong ("Superman II") and ended stronger ("Batman") for DC Comics on film, but the middle of the decade saw more misfires than hits. That included a pair of of not-great "Superman" sequels, "Supergirl" and the campy "Return of Swamp Thing."

One bright spot was 1982s "Swamp Thing" from "Nightmare on Elm Street" and "The Hills Have Eyes" director Wes Craven, who made his first and really only foray into straight-up action with this adaptation of the bog-dwelling DC hero. "Swamp Thing," while a little uneven, receives an excellent disc this week from Shout! Factory, giving us a chance to head back into the swamp and get a little mutated.

In 2007, Boom! Studios published Steven Grant's "2 Guns," a five-issue mini-series about a couple of undercover agents who get themselves into trouble with the Navy, the CIA, and the mob.  It's a quick and entertaining read, full of twists and turns and riffs on established caper formulas.

And now, "2 Guns" has become the first Boom! comic to be turned into a major motion picture.  I was curious to see what details from the comic were still present in the filmed adaptation, and what had changed with the Hollywoodization of the story.

Nostalgia has been a big part of my toy-collecting habits as of late. Predator, Rambo, Dragonball Z, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (my biggest toy-love), and Masters of the Universe all take my money from me at every turn. While I'm a big fan of the Masters of the Universe mythos, the "New Adventures" era was never a part I was too keen on. Now, Mattel and the Four Horsemen have brought a Galactic Protector variant of He-man into the line. Who cares, right? Wrong. I'm a sucker for He-Man's many versions, and this pony-tailed, space-barbarian is no different!

Oh, S.H. Figuarts, how you love separating me from my ill-gotten hard-earned money! At this year's San Diego Comic-Con, the Bluefin Tomashii Nations booth was the place to be for fan's of Dragonball Z, thanks to the S.H. Figuarts Con-Exclusive Piccolo figure! While I missed the show, a friend managed to hunt one down and ship it my way. Now, it's time for a review!

rurouni-kenshin-live-action

"Rurouni Kenshin" is screening as part of the Japan Film Festival of San Francisco. The festival runs from July 27-August 4th. You can find ticketing and film info on the festival's official site.

The most striking element of last director Keishi Ohtomo's live-action adaptation of the samurai manga "Rurouni Kenshin" is just how optimistic it is without necessarily being bright, shiny, or silly. Its hero, a skilled swordsman who has blunted the edge of his blade and vowed never to kill again, Takeru Sato, has a moral code based on the preservation of life and the film works hard to show it might not always be the "right" way, but it's what's right for this particular character.

It also helps that this snappily-paced film from drama series director Ohtomo has plenty of well-staged action pieces to go along with this post-feudal period drama, putting a spotlight on its hero and the actor who perfectly captures him.

I've spent a bit trying to articulate how, even if it's isn't exactly successful, director Fede Alvarez's "Evil Dead" (2013) captures some of the soul of the 1981 original. Overly expository, a little too busy, and maybe a little too slick, "Evil Dead" uses its practical effects and sheer punishment of its leads to do some of what Sam Raimi's original cabin in the woods splatter film did.

With the pop-culture tornado, known as San Diego Comic-Con 2013, in the rear view, it's time to reflect upon the many awesome things that transpired at the show. The first thing on my list? The convention exclusive Walter White figure from Mezco Toyz, based on Bryan Cranston's character on AMC's "Breaking Bad". Read on for the pictorial review of everyone's favorite high-school teacher turned drug kingpin!
