It's only been about four months since BBC America premiered the SF thriller "Orphan Black," but it's already become a cult sensation -- and the full room and roaring crowd for the cast and creators at the series' panel at San Diego Comic-Con was proof of that.

Okay, if you haven't watched "Orphan Black" yet, stop reading this post, as it's too good to spoil for you.  It's on DVD as of last week, it's really awesome, and you'll be completely obsessed by the time you're done with the 10 episodes. Go ahead. We'll wait.

A combined effort of The Baker Street Babes, Being Geek Chic, The Nerdy Girlie and Sherlock DC, SherlockeDCC was the place to be to meet the royalty of the online fandom.

I've just about finished unpacking my bags from this year's San Diego Comic-Con, but it's going to take a while longer than that to unpack my head of all the insanity and adrenaline and excitement that filled it over the five days of the convention.

Vertigo has seemed somewhat like a label in search of identity recently – the imprint lost some of its best-known characters to the mainstream New 52 DC Universe, flagship title "Hellblazer" was ended after a 300-issue run, and founder and longtime guiding light Karen Berger made her exit.  And while Vertigo is still home to a few high-profile comic franchises (Bill Willingham's "Fables," Mike Carey's "The Unwritten," Scott Snyder's "American Vampire"), and some spectacular limited series (Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy's "The Wake"), the edginess and constant innovation that became the imprint's calling card over the past few decades haven't been the content presences that they once were.

This year's San Diego Comic-Con was an embarrassment of riches for the scholarly fan, with an absurd amount of programming focused on different aspects of comic book culture and history.  On Sunday at 1:45, I got to sit in on the Avengers, X-Men, Dr. Strange and Sgt Fury 50th panel, which featured a multi-generational group of Marvel's finest creators: Mark Waid, John Romita Jr., Brian Bendis, and Roy Thomas.

young-avengers-afterparty

In December, the 'first season' of Marvel's "Young Avengers" will draw to a close, and author Kieron Gillen has big plans for what happens next...  But before launching into the next big storyline, he's giving them a second to kick back and have fun, as he (and series artist Jamie McKelvie) are assembling an all-star lineup of artists and guest stars for some post-New Years revelry in the special issue "Young Avengers - The Afterparty"! I took the chance to speak (and geek out) with Gillen about the story, the collaborators and characters, and his experiences creating this title.

During his our interview with the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" crew at San Diego Comic-Con, Greg Cipes, who voices Michelangelo menioted, “There's a lot of Turtles going around, more than I've ever seen.” And he was right. There were enough Turtle costumes for a full on pizza party.

tmnt-group

Nickelodeon's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" has proved that Turtle Power is alive and well despite a rocky re-boot for the franchise. Before the first episode of the new series had even aired, critics were vocal about the use of CGI over 2D animation and the jettisoning of Michelangelo's classic catchphrase "cowabunga" for Ali G's "booyakasha". And that's even leaving aside the PR headache of Michael Bay's big screen version, which was shut down in pre-production (although it's now back on track).

During San Diego Comic-Con, I sat down with the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" team (Sean Astin, Greg Cipes, Mae Whitman, Peter Hastings) to talk about fan reactions, season 2 and, of course, pizza.
