There was lots of digital news at San Diego Comic-Con 2011 this past weekend, as Yen Press announced three new licenses and an iPhone app and a group of Japanese publishers revealed initial details of JManga, a website that will bring manga straight from Japan to U.S. readers.

Are you ready for writer Matt Fraction to bring the “Big Weird” back to Marvel Comics? After years of writing big events and big ideas in titles ranging from the critically acclaimed Invincible Iron Man, to the mega-Event Fear Itself, Fraction is teaming with Uncanny X-Men collaborator Terry Dodson to bring us a brand new title with a familiar name: THE DEFENDERS.

Long a fan favorite, DEFENDERS was always known as the “non-team,” bringing together such diverse characters as Silver Surfer, Doctor Strange, The Hulk, and Namor The Sub-Mariner to battle evil in the Marvel U. And after a few fits and starts, the title is back in a new ongoing, as announced yesterday at Marvel’s Fear Itself panel – and teased throughout the past few weeks with some very cool bits of art. The series – which picks up where FEAR ITSELF left off – won’t hit comic book shops until December, but we chatted with Fraction about why he’s never been a Defenders fan, how Editor Tom Brevoort is letting him go “The Full Casanova,” and what it’s like to do Kung Fu in Zero G:

MTV Geek: Okay, Matt… The original Defenders ran for a long time, but the past few series have has a little trouble getting a foothold... Other than you guys being awesome, what makes this stab at the Defenders different?

Matt Fraction: I think we're gonna make the book awesome. I think we're gonna try to make this book unlike anything Marvel does, or has done. I think we're gonna try to make something big and weird and imaginative and thrilling and compelling, a book full of secrets and mysteries and everything that makes you love the Marvel Universe. It's a book about that, starring the characters that everybody loves, doing the stuff literally no one else is doing right now. It's a singular book in our arsenal. Which I love. It's our coolest fucking characters vs the Big Weird. Read More...

An enormously packed ballroom was filled pretty much to capacity to welcome Legendary Comics to San Diego Comic-Con 2011, and specifically Bob Schreck (Editor) and the appropriately legendary writer/artist Frank Miller. Moderated by The Beat’s Heidi MacDonald, the panel got off to a big start by talking about Miller’s upcoming, controversial “Holy Terror.”

Originally called “Holy Terror, Batman!” the book found the caped crusader battling Al Qaida and killing Osama bin Laden. With that, you know, out of the way, Miller divorced the book both from its DC Comics roots, and also from reality. Asked whether the book would be controversial, Miller said, “I’m prepared for controversy… I didn’t set out to do any religion tract. I hope people get pissed off.” Read More...

MTV was onhand to present the Good Vibes panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2011, to unveil the new high school surfer comedy featuring the voices of Josh Gad and Adam Brody. The panel was attended by creator and executive producer David Gordon Green, Executive producer and show runner Tom Brady, and creators Brad Abelson and Mike Clements. Abelson and Clements originally had the idea of a couple of slacker surfer guys in Southern California trying to get girls. Initially, it was a pilot at Fox, but ultimately ended up at MTV.

Green says they want to set out the ultiamte show about youth without making it exclusively for the young. They referenced movies like Dazed and Confused and Fast Times At Ridgemont High which could be silly, funny, and fun but true to to the youthful characters.

After a screening of an episode from the upcoming season, the panel was joined by Jake Busey, Adam Brody, Tony Hale, and Alan Tudyk to talk about the show. Read More...

This was the big one, for Who fans, as Hall H – the biggest room in San Diego Comic-Con 2011 – welcomed a “sold out” crowd of over 6,000 people, excited to see the Doctor (Matt Smith), and his companion Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) in their first ever Comic-Con appearance. Also on tap for the panel were writer Toby Whithouse (who, fun fact, also created Being Human), Piers Wenger (Executive Producer), Beth Willis (Producer), and moderator Adam Rogers.

…And you knew you were in for a good panel when – about three minutes from start time – hundreds of fans started clapping a familiar rhythm, the four finger taps at the beginning of time that played heavily into David Tennant’s final season as the Doctor. Yeah, we were getting reeeeal nerdy up in here.

The panel kicked off with an INCREDIBLE recap of the previous season, showing off all the twists and turns, which may have gotten one MTV Geek blogger totally choked up. Wasn’t me though. I think it was Lemonjuice McGee, probably.

Anyway, then the cast and crew was brought out, and the whole crowd went insane. Once things had settled down (slightly), Rogers asked Gillan how it felt to be Alex Kingston’s Mom, as revealed in the last episode. “I never thought that would happen, but that’s pretty cool, isn’t it?” said Gillan. “My Mom’s probably pretty excited that she’s Alex Kingston’s grandmom.” Read More...

Teen Wolf stars Tyler Posey, Crystal Reed, Dylan O’Brien, Tyler Hoechlin, Holland Roden and Colton Haynes, along with executive producer Jeff Davis and Director/co-executive producer Russell Mulcahy, were at San Diego Comic-Con 2011 to talk about the popular new series and show exclusive footage.

Here are some highlights from the panel:

* While season one is wrapping up on August 15th, a new season has been green lit. On Monday night's episode, we'll also learn the identity of The Alpha.

* We also saw a sizzle reel from the remaining four episodes of the current season.

* When the Tylers took the stage, the crowd erupted into a thousand girls' screams (the room only seated 425, by the way).

* Hoechlin says that the big change between this Con and the last is that people know who they are now.

* On their favorite episodes, Mulchahy spoke about the way the series accelerates. Hoechlin and Crystal say their favorite was episode 3, while Posey says his involved a scene where he and Crystal got to make out. Actually, everyone's favorite scenes seemed to involve shirtlessness and making out.

* Attempting to avoid spoilers, Colton tried to sidestep what was happening to his character after being scratched by Derek. We'll see what that's about in episode 10.

* In answer to whether his character Derek is a bad guy, Hoechlin says Derek is simply trying to protect Scott. "He's a good and a bad guy," and "hates Stiles." In the next couple of episodes, we'll learn about his deep, dark past and more about his relationship with Kate.

* Posey says that Stiles makes things easier for everyone--he's so selfless and says that the character deserves a cake.

* Holland says that her character "simply wants to be on top" of the social chain in high school.

* Posey says that since the show debuted, he gets recognized more often, and a lot more people are screaming at him. In a good way.

* He also says that Scott the werewolf is more fun to play than Scott the teen.

* Not everyone is going to leave the season alive and there may be fewer humans.

* For fans who didn't know, the reason that the show's werewolves don't typically go full-wolf is because shape shifters simply have to get stronger with age.

* In response to why he took the campy original into a more grim, horror-focused remake, the show's creator thought about homaging another 80's favorite, The Lost Boys, in terms of dark tone.

* The switch to lacrosse came from the show's creator, Jeff Davis seeing kids around him playing the game as a youth, and that basketball had been done a lot on TV.

*Oh, and there was only one "I love you." But a LOT of "Take off your shirts."

We could be wrong about this, but we’re pretty sure this was the panel that fans – by the thousands – waited out for in the blazing hot sun here at San Diego Comic-Con 2011. I mean, that’s what we did. But after several hours, and our skin starting to glow red, peel off, and reveal the lizard underneath, a packed-to-capacity crowd was treated by an appearance by the god of Comic-Con himself, Joss Whedon.

Scott Allie, the Editor of Buffy, Angel, and other titles came the stage right at the top, and mentioned that an eight page Spike story by Jane Espenson would be available for free in stores in August. And then it was time for the hilarious and self deprecating Whedon to take the stage. Whedon talked about the upcoming Buffy Season Nine, which will be more grounded that season eight. “I know most of you have had sex in universal wars, and had sex and created new universes… But I think we can make season nine more universal than that,” joked Whedon. Marvel Legends is back, suckas! After being canceled over a year ago, the line that began with Toy Biz and then died with Hasbro has been resurrected and will be on shelves at the beginning of 2012! In its stead, Marvel Universe has risen up (in all of its 3 3/4" height will allow) and now has gained its own fair share of fans. Needless to say, the panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2011 opened to a packed room and massive applause. David Voner and Dwight Stall, product managers for Marvel Universe and Marvel Legends, respectively, ran through their lines upcoming highlights to the anticipation-filled crowd. Now, we're gonna tell you how it all went down.

The presentation began with this year's Comic-Con exclusives. While people are very familiar with the M.U. Sentinel and the M.L. Thor, there were also a Spider-Man Mighty Muggs with a removable mask and a Mighty Muggs Avengers set, featuring an over-sized Giant Man. Read More...

MTV Geek had the chance to chat with the cast of the upcoming Napoleon Dynamite cartoon at San Diego Comic-Con 2011 -- which happens to also be the cast of the original hit movie!

Jon Heder reflected on the lasting legacy of Napoleon Dynamite:

"Obviously, it's the main thing I'm recognized for...people are like, "Hey Napoleon!" But that's cool, 'cause people recognize you and it's stood the test of time!"

Efren Ramirez commented on what it's like to return to the character he's famous for, Pedro:

"Coming back as Pedro, I gotta admit, it's a bit of a challenge. Because after Napoleon Dynamite, I got approached by so many people playing Pedro...and so one of the things I don't want to do is act like I'm playing Pedro. I have to remember: I was Pedro -- how do I create this character again?"

Ramirez is also a master of impersonations, and provided us with several...including one of Napoleon himself!
