Remember all those jokes you made when Before Watchmen was announced, saying, "What's next, Before Sandman?" Well, guess what: as officially announced at today's Vertigo panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Neil Gaiman is returning to his most famous creation - The Sandman - one more time, for a prequel miniseries to be released next year.

Granted, of course, there's a couple of key differences that should wash away all controversy with this project; the biggest that Gaiman - the guy who created the character, and one of the most beloved and important comic book series of all time - is making the decision to return. He explained as much in the video shown at the panel, which, lucky you, we have for you to watch right here:

After that little bombshell, Vertigo Editor Karen Berger welcomed the artist for the book out on the stage, none other than J.H. Williams, III the critically acclaimed artist (and writer) of Batwoman. Which, in our humble opinion, given Williams brilliant use of layouts and design, is a perfect fit for this series, and the Sandman aesthetic in general. Don't believe us? Here's the first piece of art from the project:

Other details, you say? For that, we turn it over to Neil Gaiman:

"When I finished writing THE SANDMAN, there was one tale still untold. The story of what had happened to Morpheus to allow him to be so easily captured in THE SANDMAN #1, and why he was returned from far away, exhausted beyond imagining, and dressed for war. It was a story that we discussed telling for SANDMAN's 20th anniversary... but the time got away from us. And now, with SANDMAN's 25th anniversary year coming up, I'm delighted, and nervous, that that story is finally going to be told,” said Gaiman.

So there you go. Plenty more on this as it develops, of course, and stay tuned to MTV Geek for everything SDCC 2012! Oh, and if you want to read the official DC press release on this, here you go:

Surprise Announcement at San Diego Comic-Con Pairs Legendary, Award Winning Author with Artist JH Williams, III Under DC Entertainment’s Vertigo Imprint

SAN DIEGO, CA – July 12, 2012 – Twenty-five years after one of the most celebrated graphic novels of all-time hit shelves, award winning and critically acclaimed author and screenwriter, Neil Gaiman, announces his return to THE SANDMAN. Gaiman made the surprise announcement, via video, at DC Entertainment’s Vertigo panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Karen Berger, Executive Editor of Vertigo, then revealed that Gaiman is paired with artist, JH Williams III (BATWOMAN) for the series, who appeared on stage to an already stunned and elated crowd. THE SANDMAN mini-series will be published by Vertigo in 2013.

One of the few graphic novels ever to be on the New York Times Best Seller list and lauded by critics the world over, THE SANDMAN is credited with changing the path of storytelling in the comic book industry. Gaiman will pick up his pen for the first time in more than 10 years since ending the series to continue a story that he feels still has yet to be told.

"There's nothing like a Neil Gaiman story," said Berger, "and there's nothing like having Neil back home on THE SANDMAN, his dark, soulful, literary epic that transformed comics and continues to captivate countless new readers year after year. Working with him again, and with JH Williams, the extraordinary and groundbreaking artist, is truly the stuff dreams are made of."

DC Entertainment Co-Publishers Jim Lee and Dan DiDio added, “As accomplished as Neil Gaiman is in other media—whether it be novels, film and even music—he still has an incredible passion and love for comics. It’s exciting to have him back. J.H. Williams will be the perfect complement to Neil’s writing. He has a history of creating art that pushes the boundaries of the medium.”

Each issue of THE SANDMAN mini-series will be published day-and-date digitally. The title will be announced at a later date.

After its SDCC premiere, I guess I'm just going to have to get past my skepticism about the premise at the core of NBC's upcoming sci-fi series from J.J. Abrams, Revolution because the truth is, it's actually an enjoyable frontier drama with some thrilling action beats. Whatever the mysterious event is that knocks out the world's ability to generate and use technology is a rock-solid conceit (EMP? Aliens? Who knows) but the fact that 15 years later, human society hasn't figured out a way to turn the lights back on seems unlikely at best. Does the power to conduct electricity simply not exist anymore?

MTV Geek caught up with "The Walking Dead" creator Robert Kirkman at San Diego Comic-Con to discuss all things related to his zombie hit. MTV Geek Comic-Con LIVE co-host Katrina Hill asked Kirkman how he feels about the historical 100-hundredth issue of "The Walking Dead". Said the writer:

"It's really cool. I didn't think the series would last for two years -- and its been nearly ten years now? Being able to hit that landmark issue is really exciting." Read More...

Jeff Parker has taken the past few years to redefine Marvel Comics' Red Hulk... And now he's going to do the same thing with another Hulk, as the title changes into Red She-Hulk with issue #58. Formerly Betty Ross, Red She-Hulk has shown up in a few titles, including Hulk itself - but this is her first time anchoring a book solo. We chatted EXCLUSIVELY with Parker before the announcement at SDCC 2012 about all this, what's going to happen to General Ross, and what makes his take on Betty unique:

MTV Geek: Well, looks like old Rulkie doesn’t get out of “Mayan Rule” unscathed, huh? What can you tell us about Thunderbolt’s fate when Red She-Hulk #58 kicks off?

Jeff Parker: Alex, Red Hulk has to go all the way out of Hulk because his expertise is required in another place. And I think if I tell you that, I'll get smashed. I bet it announces any minute now! Read More...

On San Diego Comic-Con 2012's Preview Night, we had a number of stops that were on the top of our list. Naturally, the thought of seeing new Marvel Legends had us making a bee line for the Hasbro booth as soon as we made it inside the convention center! Waiting for us, protected by a glass case, was the entire line up for Series 3 (Wave 1 of '13), including the variants. What wasn't waiting for us? A new Build-A-Figure. The figures in Series 3 are packaged instead with the hexagonal figure stands like we've seen in the Wal-Mart exclusive "The Avengers" 6 inch line. While those stands are admittedly quite awesome, when it comes to displaying your figures, they are in no way a good enough substitute for a BAF! Dwight Stall, the-man-with-the-plan when it comes to Hasbro's Marvel Legends, told us that while the Build-A-Figure concept isn't dead, they have something else fun planned for 2013.

Obviously, this new addition wasn't packaged with the figures, so perhaps a mail-away figure? Only time will tell-- and by "time", we mean "when they tell us on Saturday at the Hasbro Marvel panel." Read on for a look at all of the Marvel Legends Series 3 figures, including the red Deadpool variant!

I’m sitting in the Cryptozoic Store at SDCC 2012 before hours, sipping coffee and listening to the designer of the company's brand new DC Comics based card game, and I hear Yvette from Game of Thrones whispering in my ear: “You know nothing, Alex Zalben.”

One of the joys of Comic-Con is that there’s something for every single section of fandom. Like Cosplay? There’s a LOT of Cosplay. Love video games? You can preview the latest and greatest. Movie fan? Go home, you can’t get into Hall H. And one of the more unique fandoms is, of course, tabletop gaming. From card games, to board games, and beyond, there’s a ton of excellent geeky properties to play, and it seems like most of the best games are made by Cryptozoic. Read More...

If there’s one thing every Whovian dreams of, it’s the chance to pilot the TARDIS. If there’s two things? Well, “Working Sonic Screwdriver” would probably rate pretty high on that list. So when we heard we’d have the chance to demo one this morning at BBC America’s booth at San Diego Comic-Con, we dropped our fish sticks and custard, and whooped a happy “Geronimo!”

Now, before you get TOO excited, this isn’t the all purpose tool sported by the Doctor, but it is a brilliant recreation, and a rather incredible gesture based Universal Remote. Thanks to the good folks at Think Geek, and The Wand Company, we got a hands on with the unit (which won’t be on sale until August 31st), as well as a rundown on how it works. So here’s the gist of it:

The first official day of SDCC 2012, and the first big panel bringing together all of DC Comic’s huge talent might have lacked the free Court of Owl masks given away at the Publisher’s Batman panel, but it did have some fun surprises nonetheless. First though, there were some digs about another Publisher, as this panel was called "DC NOW!" and there's a certain "Marvel NOW!" that has also been recently announced. Jokes out of the way, on the panel were writers Geoff Johns, Jimmy Palmiotti, Scott Snyder, Scott Lobdell, as well as writer Brian Buccellato, writer/artists Rob Liefeld, and Amanda Conner, and Editor Bobbie Chase, and EIC Bob Harras.

As usual with DC's panels, they started off running down everything the panelists have been doing, starting with the news that Geoff Johns' Batman: Earth One will be a New York Times #1 Bestseller next week. Johns also mentioned that after finishing his origin in Justice League #0, Shazam will be joining the team in Year Two. Read More...
