Toy Fair 2012: Mezco Toyz Scares Up The Universal Monsters

The Universal Monsters, and the films they terrorized, are an integral component to American film history and we are glad to see the ol' Gang of Horrors getting their due with a number of action figure and toy releases. While Diamond Select Toys have been bringing out Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, and a number of others in their Select-scale, our pals over at Mezco Toyz are planning a full barrage of monsters in all styles and sizes! We gazed at the entire lineup during Toy Fair 2012, and now we're that much closer to owning them with the latest announcement that the 9" Frankenstein will be the first release! The styling on these hearkens back to Mezco's earlier lines like Gangsters Inc., Reservoir Dogs, and the stylized Tony Montana from "Scarface" with realistic texturing placed over more exaggerated sculpts. We can't wait to have this re-animated monster on our shelves in time for Halloween!

Read on for all the info straight from Mezco Toyz, along with a shot of the variant version of Frankenstein's Monster!

So I did a post last month on previewing the Scene It Star Wars game coming out this fall and now they have just released a teaser trailer to show us Jedis what we'll be looking forward to!

Just in case you missed it, here again are the game details:

From the Battle of Naboo to the birth of Luke Skywalker, from the rise of Darth Vader to the fall of the Galactic Empire - Scene It? Star Wars delivers hours of fun spanning the complete Star Wars film saga. As one of the engaging new puzzle types introduced in this landmark title, the “Jedi Archives” challenges players to solve puzzles utilizing behind-the- scenes film assets, from storyboards, production stills, concept art and more.  The Force will need to be with fans as they try to solve the “Finish the Line” puzzles, which task Star Wars devotees to complete key dialogue from the films.  The “Imperial Listening Post” incorporates the fantastic sound effects of Star Wars, as players endeavor to identify the iconic hum of lightsabers, or the inspiration of Chewbacca’s signature voice. Emulating R2-D2’s famous projector, “Holonet Disruptions” presents clues in holographic projections, as first depicted in the original Star Wars.

This isn't the first time we've seen iconic astromech droid R2-D2 in LEGO form; master builders have displayed life-size LEGO versions of him numerous times around the globe. However, this time things are a little different as the model you see above is becoming an actual LEGO set so we can all take a swing at putting it together! Read More...

Toy Fair 2012: Hasbro's Marvel Legends

The Marvel Legends reviews just keep coming, and today we're taking a look at the catalyst for the upcoming Avengers vs. X-Men crossover: Hope Summers! The time-traveling mutant savior is easily the hardest to acquire figure from Hasbro's ML Wave 1. Sure, this is partly due to her being a short-packed female figure, but it is also a testament to just how popular she has become with fans of her Marvel Comics character and the importance that's being emphasized on her character as of late. For all intents and purposes, this red-haired mutant will be the new home of the Phoenix Force; but sadly, this Hope Summers figures may have more in common with Mr. Fantastic than Jean Grey.

The late Steve Jobs is no stranger to being immortalized in (mostly unauthorized) toys and dolls. The latest one, by Throwboy, purports not to be a doll of Jobs at all...but instead, simply a bespectacled "iCEO" with a remarkable resemblance to the Apple co-founder.

The limited edition doll is 15 inches tall, with black turtleneck, jeans, and removable eyeglasses. The Throwboy website indicates that 10% of all proceeds from sales of Steve Jobs iCEO will go to the American Cancer Society. So if you are a big Apple fan and have $60 to spare...this might be the doll for you. (though with the long history of cease & desist notices over these toys, you might want to purchase one sooner rather than later)

It's not often we a see a Nintendo / Transformers mashup, actually, I don't think I've ever seen a Nintendo and Transformers mashup. Well, not up until now anyway. Yep, what you see above is a classic Nintendo Gameboy made of LEGO that's also a Transformer, but we all know the real question -- Is this guy an Autobot or a Decepticon? Read More...

Oh R2, he never ceases to entertain me and the fact that he's become an awesome inflatable RC toy is just the icing on the cake. I mean honestly people, what could be better than having your own radio-controlled R2-D2 to drive around the house? Nothing, you know it to be true. Read More...

Toy Fair 2012: Square Enix Visits Arkham

This week sees the release of Square Enix' latest action figure in their Play Arts KAI line: Batman! The Dark Knight is based on his appearance in the extremely badass "Batman: Arkham Asylum" video game and is quite possibly the BEST damn Batman figure in existence! (*That title will switch hands once the Hot Toys version comes out.) We first saw this figure at last year's San Diego Comic Con, and our unwavering desire to own him only grew when we were once again faced with his cowled visage during Toy Fair 2012. Now, only a month after the drool-worthy visit to Square Enix' booth, we have this action figure in our grasp! Upon picking him up at our LCS, we tore into his window box packaging and freed the "World's Greatest Detective" from his plastic prison so we could go on patrol together like best friends bring you this review!

SPOILER ALERT: If you're looking to read loads of negativity, you're looking in the wrong place. This figure is just that good!

We all know how sweet the AR.Drone 2.0 is and how much fun it would be to fly around everyday, but this quadrotor DeLorean is on a whole other level. Sure it's just a customized hobby kit, but even though its not packing all the tech and cameras found in the AR.Drone, flying RC toys don't get much cooler than this. Read More...

Toy Fair 2012: Hasbro's Marvel Legends

This spring has been Ghost Rider's time to shine with a frivolous lawsuit, a film full of Nicolas Cage-fueled insanity, and now a new figure in the first wave of Hasbro's re-launch of Marvel Legends! While the regular figure in this line is the blue-flamed Danny Ketch, we're taking a look at the variant version. Much like or review of Steve Rogers, this figure has a different paintjob than the regular Ghost Rider. He's got orange flames, a skull that looks like a Cheeto after the powder is licked off, and is orange-hued to be our own favorite Spirit of Vengeance: Johnny Blaze!

Toy Fair 2012: Mattel Shows off 'The Dark Knight Rises' Toys

UPDATE: Warner Bros. & Mattel have asked that the pictures from MattyCollector.com be removed.

During Toy Fair 2012, Mattel revealed a new line of Movie Master figures based on the upcoming "The Dark Knight Rises" film (You can watch the video above and check out our coverage here.) that each come with a piece to construct a working Bat Signal! The first three (Batman, Bane, and Catwoman) were shown, but there are 6 figures in the line. Who are the other 3 Bat-centric action figures the Four Horsemen sculpted to perfection? Well, Mattel just announced 2 of them, along with the new packaging for the line. Sadly, like most of their in-house reveals, the photos are miniscule; so, here's a big one we took of Bane at Toy Fair:

Toy designer and sculptor Joe Amaro is well known in the action figure industry. He's been involved in the toy industry for the last decade and is known for his work with Toyfare Magazine, Robot Chicken, Four Horsemen Design Studios, and Jazwares. Joe still finds spare time to make custom figures and accessories for the lines he's truly passionate about, like Mattel's Masters of the Universe Classics, and it just so happens that his friend, and one of the most talented and well-known packaging painters for the Masters of the Universe line (vintage Castle Grayskull, MOTUC Wind Raider, etc.), Mr. Rudy Obrero collaborated on a custom vehicle: The Manta Raider! While this awesome "jet skate" doesn't have much hope of seeing the light of day, it's a sight to behold. Just check out Rudy's original painted concept below!

We took a few minutes to talk to Joe Amaro about the Manta Raider and his plans for future customs:

MTV Geek: How long did it take to complete the Manta Raider, from the time you and Rudy decided to collaborate until the finish piece of awesomeness?

Joe Amaro: We started in August of 2011 worked on it off and on. Mainly when we had enough time...it was more me slacking it than Rudy.

Toy Fair 2012: Hasbro's Marvel Legends Figures

As our Marvel Legends reviews roll on, Marvel Comics' favorite patriot Steve Rogers gets the spotlight! Hasbro's first wave of re-launched Marvel Legends has the Marvel Holy Trinity of Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America-- in a sense. When Steve Rogers worked his way back through time, or being dead, or whatever, he let Bucky keep the mantle of Captain America and forged on as a super soldier while using his own name and running the world's security forces. This new figure was one of our most anticipated from the new line-up but we only found the variant version on the pegs. In fact, it seems that the variant cases have been far more plentiful at retail thus far. Did this black-suited version live up to our red, white, and blue hopes and dreams? Read on to find out!
