Each week, Matt Wilson, co-host of the War Rocket Ajax podcast and author of the Supervillain Field Manual, examines a major comic news item and reviews four of the week's comic book releases.

Last week, DC Comics found itself in the unenviable position of being the roadblock to the first-ever lesbian wedding in superhero comics, and as a result, the creative team on "Batwoman," J.H. Williams III and W. Haden Blackman, left the title.

trillium

By Matt D. Wilson

"Trillium" is a comic book about a lot of things. It's about a scientist and a soldier. It's about the future and the past. Life and death. The earth and the stars. Civilization and nature.

There's just a whole lot to unpack, and writer/artist Jeff Lemire only has eight issues to pull it off. In advance of the first issue, a two-sided flipbook which includes spotlight stories about both a far-future scientist and a World War I soldier, and which hits comic shops this Wednesday, Lemire took a few minutes to talk with MTV Geek about what he hopes to accomplish.

Vertigo has seemed somewhat like a label in search of identity recently – the imprint lost some of its best-known characters to the mainstream New 52 DC Universe, flagship title "Hellblazer" was ended after a 300-issue run, and founder and longtime guiding light Karen Berger made her exit.  And while Vertigo is still home to a few high-profile comic franchises (Bill Willingham's "Fables," Mike Carey's "The Unwritten," Scott Snyder's "American Vampire"), and some spectacular limited series (Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy's "The Wake"), the edginess and constant innovation that became the imprint's calling card over the past few decades haven't been the content presences that they once were.

July 31, Tom Strong will return to comics for the first time in more than seven years with the new series "Tom Strong and the Planet of Peril," the new six-issue miniseries from writer Peter Hogan and artist Chris Sprouse. They're both well-versed in the character, as Sprouse drew a huge portion of the previous Strong series, and Hogan wrote several stories concurrent with co-creator Alan Moore's work on the character.

MTV Geek got a few minutes with the writer of the new series to discuss the jump from ABC to Vertigo, how life has changed for Tom, what working on a Moore character feels like, and much more!

MTVG-fables

Earlier this week, news broke that the production company behind the Harry Potter films had acquired the film rights to Bill Willingham's well-loved Fables series, and was moving forward on a big-screen adaptation of the property.

The premise of Fables is that all mythological characters exist alongside one another, and become the basis of legends and folk tales as they move in the background of the real world.  This style of fairytale mash-up has become increasingly popular in recent years: Shrek, Hoodwinked, and other similar movies have seen huge box office success; Grimm and Once Upon A Time are gearing up for their third seasons on NBC and ABC; and the grandfather of them all, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's seminal 1987 Broadway musical Into The Woods is finally headed for a big-screen adaptation after nearly two decades of development.

But what makes Fables special is the depth of characterization, the scale of the narrative (with more than thirty-five different books currently in print), and the variety of threads that it weaves into a cohesive whole – including elements of Mother Goose, The Arabian Nights, L. Frank Baum's Oz books, Brothers Grimm stories, and many, many other fantasy creations. Read More...
