Several months ago, DC Comics invited us to travel up Broadway and get our very first look at "Before Watchmen." Placed in my hands was the "Green Book," the binder that collected -- in various stages of production -- the latest covers and interior pages as they came in. While not as comprehensive as reading the actual issues, viewing the collection of art and words provided me with a certain baseline as to the quality and content of the "Before Watchmen" collection of miniseries. Now that the official press embargo has lifted on "first impression" pieces, I am free to give you mine.
DC has had a policy of holding back on releasing to the public any "Before Watchmen" interior pages prior to publication -- but I think if they had provided such previews, they would have put the lie to the idea floated around portions of the comics media that the project is nothing more than a cheap cash grab. You can't have something with the high level of artistic achievement as evidenced in those pages and call it "cheap." The work that I saw in that Green Book was, quite frankly, some of the best the individual artists have done in their entire careers. Read More...

The Guild comics – like most licensed properties – are a fascinating thing. You can take a well known property like, say, a Star Wars, or a Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and use the comics to just repeat stories, flesh out the universe, or somewhere in between. And at the same time, there’s a constant need to both shout out to the fans, and make the comics accessible to a newer audience.
That’s a tricky thing to do for any comic book, and something writers in the comics industry struggle with on a daily basis. For something that already has a fanbase more used to another medium (say, web videos), this is, in a way, even trickier. The writers not only need to honor what’s come before, but somehow channel what made the original good, in a more static art form.
For Felicia Day’s Guild series, and the accompanying Dark Horse Comics, the writers and artists (mostly Day, with some collaborators) have taken an approach that definitely leans more towards the established fan of her series, with some notable exceptions, and with varying results. The set up is, each book has been a one-shot focusing on a main character from the titular game playing Guild (with the exception of the initial three issue mini-series, which worked as a prequel to the web series proper). And each book has pulled from a different part of The Guild’s timeline, though mostly working as The Guild: Year One. Read More...

This week, Top Cow releases the first trade paperback featuring Hack/Slash writer Tim Seeley's take on the Witchblade, with Witchblade: Rebirth, Vol. 1: Unbalanced Pieces. Though you may have gotten a peek at the story on Free Comic Book Day, the trade expands on the myth of the Witchblade, as well as transplanting its wielder Sara Pezzini to Chicago for a healthy helping of Deep Dish Horror! That's our words, not Seeley's.
Anyway, we chatted with Seeley about the book, his take on whether Witchblade is just cheesecake, and the possibility of Sara Pezzini meeting Cassie Hack:
MTV Geek: So this week sees the release of the first Witchblade trade... Looking back on it now, did you accomplish what you wanted to with your first arc on the book? I imagine there was a bit of nerves playing into there, coming into a storied franchise like this - or not?
Tim Seeley: Yeah, for sure. Fortunately, I have these sort of blinders doing stuff like this. I'm always aware of the pressure, the rabid fans, the potential for massive failure in the eyes of people who I respect... but, at least while I'm working, I pretty much never think about it. It's not until maybe a day or two after a book comes out that I go "S**T! I should've been nervous about that!" and then I collapse into a gibbering, trembling mass on the ground and can only be consoled by Mallo Cups.
Geek: Let’s talk about the first arc a bit, which really hit the grossness/sexiness dichotomy that I think is at the heart of any great Witchblade story... What was your idea here? What was the thought process?
TS: My thought was that we had to hit the ground running. Though there was a larger back story going on due to the effect of ARTIFACTS, the focus had to be establishing a new city with it's many new characters and a new vibe, and doing it fast. I think Ron's run really defined the character, and he built her up before taking her apart. I wanted to write about a Sara who was looking at a life in pieces, trying to figure out how they went back together. I think Witchblade has always been a sort of dark urban fantasy story with elements of horror and superhero genres, so I cooked up a tale I thought drew from all of those things. I first read Witchblade as a teenager, so I know how important the sexiness is to the story, and wanted to make sure I didn't avoid it!
Geek: Who is Sara Pezzini, to you? Other than a cop, and the bearer of the Witchblade, what makes her such a unique and enduring character?
TS: Sara is first a foremost a survivor. No matter what situation she's in, she just takes a deep breath, and figures out how to get through it. She's kind of zen that way. And, I think most importantly, she's a very moral person. To Sara, there's good and bad. She doesn't think of thinks in terms of moral grey areas, and she rarely doubts herself. Read More...

This Saturday, Nickelodeon’s Legend of Korra is all new with an episode that finds our heroes relaxing after the apocalyptic events at the Pro-Bending Finals... But that’s before the big twist reveal that someone close to Korra may be working with her arch enemies, the Equalists!
In advance of the episode, not only did we snag an EXCLUSIVE clip from the episode, we also chatted with P.J. Byrne, the voice of goofball - and sometimes Korra romancer - Bolin about the rapport between the cast, what’s coming up for his character, and oh yeah... The Kiss:
MTV Geek: General question to kick off, but what - for you - goes into making the character Bolin?
P.J. Byrne: I got really lucky in the sense that this character, oddly enough, is similar to me. He’s a young guy who has a super positive attitude on life, he’s uberly trusting, and when he’s in on something he’s all in. Friendship, life, he’s all in. That’s what I love about this character, and that’s what I love as well.
Geek: I was reading one of the Avatar Wikis before I was chatting with you, and there were tons of comments on your page - not the character’s page, but your personal page - and they all said, “Hey, if you take off his glasses, he IS Bolin!”
PJB: [Laughs] We’re very similar, except he has a better head of hair, and a better body! I think my wife would be happy if I was that strong; she’d be happier about her life. Our eyebrows... They’re some pretty thick eyebrows, but it’s just happenstance. I never really realized it, and then I was looking at it and said, oh my god, they are right, I do look like him a little bit.
Geek: I know most animated shows record separately, but what about you - what’s the relationship like between you and the other actors?
PJB: We’re really lucky that they try to get us all together. The great thing that Mike and Bryan [Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, creators of the show] did, and Nickelodeon is they cast some genuinely good, nice people. Not only are they extremely talented, but they’re just quality people. So they get us all together, we all love hanging out with each other to begin with, and then when I get to rock with Janet [Varney] and David {Faustino], it comes out through the cartoon, as well. As much as we like each other, Korra, Mako, and Bolin like each other as well. Read More...

It’s OK to be offended. For many of you, the card game Tentacle Bento will provide such offense in spades. The concept of gamers using tentacles to snatch up schoolgirls is an uncomfortable one to say the least, but if you weren’t quite sure how you felt about the game, you’ll have to wait a bit longer to find out. Tentacle Bento has had a successful Kickstarter project cancelled after a campaign of protest was launched by Brandon Sheffield of insert credit and furthered by Luke Plunkett of Kotaku.
While a game's theme can provoke an immediate moral judgment, a more nuanced ethical dilemma also presents itself: When should the power of the media be used to call an audience to action? Surely, journalists encourage their readers to support Kickstarter projects on a daily basis, but it’s not often we see attempts to have a project killed.

Looking at that painting, we think that Godzilla trampling the San Diego Convention Center, while looking awesome, would considerably wipe out some of the best and brightest creators of comics, toys, and film. On the other hand, his fiery breath would effectively nullify the stench that permeates the con floor by day 2 of SDCC from the sweat-filled costumes and overly-packed bodies. We guess there really is a silver lining to every catastrophic situation! This year, you can play out the scenario for yourself on the sidewalk, in the convention center, or even in your hotel's bath tub (creepy!) thanks to Bandai Japan's San Diego Comic-Con exclusive S.H. MonsterArts Godzilla in his fiery orange "Comic-Con Explosion" color scheme! This Godzilla uses the same sculpt as their previous S.H. MonsterArts figure, but has been molded in faded, semi-translucent plastic. While this version of the destroyer/protector of Tokyo stands roughly 6 inches tall, he is almost 15 inches long from head to tail!

Fans who have seen the Summer’s biggest blockbuster know one thing: the true star isn’t the super-soldier, the guy in the iron suit, or even the “other guy” - it’s the shawarma. But superheroes have been picky about their food long before the Avengers (and their favorite spiced meat) were the new hotness. Here are ten superheroes favorite foods:
