"Community" creator Dan Harmon at San Diego Comic-Con 2011

San Diego Comic-Con is almost upon us, and as we prepare for the inevitable onslaught of back problems, dehydration, and potential trampling to death, we're figuring out which of the many, many, many, many, many panels at this year's show are worth our time, assuming we can get in.

Community-Gate 2K13 continues! The good news is, returning show-runner Dan Harmon has started work on Season 5 of Community. The bad news? He had to apologize profusely for insulting everyone.

But first, the background: as most of you Greendale human beings know, Community Season 4 was a bit of a train-wreck, to put it lightly. Show creator Dan Harmon was unceremoniously booted, and replaced by Moses Port and David Guarascio... Who proceeded to deliver a show that was a pale imitation of the original, more like fan fiction than a follow-up. That's not even editorializing, really, nor do I blame them: Harmon is a singular, eccentric visionary who misses as often as he hits. But you can't follow up Van Gogh with a three year old, it just doesn't work.

Realizing the show was tanking, and with a new season of the horizon, star Joel McHale managed to convince NBC to bring Harmon back into the fold, a near unprecedented move in television. That of course meant Harmon had to watch the fourth season, something he had previously avoided doing for obvious reasons. So he watched the show. And then, true to form, Harmon went on his live podcast Harmontown, and spoke about the season. And the Internet erupted.

The two quotes in particular that people hooked into were: Read More...

There's the good, the great, and then there's the BEST. Welcome to MTV Geek's Best of 2012 -- what we thought were the cream of the crop this year in the world of GEEK!

While TV shows get canceled and messed with all the time, the fate of "Community" over 2012 has been particularly, spectacularly cruel. Should we blame the Mayans?

MTV Geek is counting down the 10 Most OMG Moments Of Geek! #8 concerns a certain cult TV show...

To put it bluntly: if you are a fan of "Community," 2012 really sucked.

The brilliant Dan Harmon rises from the ashes of his "Community" ousting with the new half-hour animated series "Rick & Morty" for Adult Swim. The show, from Harmon and Justin Roliand, centers on the struggles between a genius inventor and his not-so-bright grandson.

Last time we chatted with "Community" star Danny Pudi, he was launching a contest with Speed Stick, asking fans to send him their most awkward stories through Twitter. The winning story was then made into a video, with Pudi narrating… But mostly that meant we got to chat with Pudi one more time about the contest, as well as the upcoming season of "Community." Oh, and if a certain red-haired former "Doctor Who" companion would be showing up any time soon.

The third season of Community arrived on DVD recently, and it was a nice opportunity to revisit Dan Harmon's last stint with Greendale before the fourth season makes its debut. It's also a chance for me to reflect on my own complicated reaction to the beloved cult NBC series.

"Community" creator and former showrunner Dan Harmon hopped on Reddit for an epic AMA ("Ask Me Anything") -- and, as might be expected, didn't pull his punches regarding his former bosses as well as actor Chevy Chase. But Harmon also demonstrated a remarkably touching side as well, as evidenced in the following exchange between a Swiss fan:

IrisKV: I know you must get this all the time but... here we go again. Through Abed, you broke my heart so many times I stopped counting, because where people would find him funny, I felt like I finally could relate to someone...You provided me with the kind of guidance I couldn't find anywhere else. Even if at times you didn't seem happy, you were...well, to me, you are a genius, and that was enough for me to know. Because when I get depressed, when I get broken, when I feel like everything is falling apart, I just re-read stuff you wrote, I re-watch bits of Community, I listen to your podcast, and I just know that everything will be okay, and that I'm not the only one feeling like that. Former "Community" showrunner Dan Harmon was not light on words about the show when interviewed recently on KCRW's "The Business." While admitting that he faulted his own "self-destructive behavior" for being let go from "Community" --  "I would have fired me" -- Harmon also said Sony never really liked him anyway and was just looking for an excuse to cut him loose:

"Sony was always so bummed out about the way I wrote and thought, and they always fantasized about doing the show without me..." Read More...

The whole Greendale gang is back for another go-round on the beloved and wonderful NBC series Community. Yup, that's right, Abed, Troy, Jeff, Annie, Britta, Shirley, Chang, the Dean and even Chevy Chase's Pierce, who was lukewarm about his return to the show following a very public stink with ousted creator Dan Harmon.
