cakenweenie-interview

A few months ago we chatted with Tracey Rothwell about her geektastic cake business, Little Cherry/Black Cherry and now she’s back with a new venture. She gathered 100 bakers from around the world to celebrate the birthday of a man who is without a doubt one of the most renowned innovators past and present, Tim Burton, for the project "Cakenweenie."

In a lot of ways, the black and white, animated "Frankenweenie" feels like Tim Burton's most personal movie to date: how else would you describe this loving homage to classic horror monsters featuring a lonely, sensitive, and creative boy in the mid-60's grappling with loss in a close-minded town? Burton resurrected his own 1984 short about young Victor Frankenstein using the power of science to resurrect his poor dead dog Sparky (with a design that even recalls the Burton-produced animated series "Family Dog").

So why then, does "Frankenweenie" 2012 feel so incomplete and cobbled together with loose ideas? And more troubling, why didn't a movie about a dead dog (and the boy who loves him) completely and totally break my heart?

Early this morning host Seth McFarlane and the world's favorite actress Emma Stone announced the 2013 Academy Award nominations. There were quite a few shockers - mostly the multiple nods for "Beasts of the Southern Wild" and "Amour" in all major categories as well as the snubbing of Question Tarantino and Kathyrn Bigelow in the best director category and P.T. Anderson's "The Master's" shut out of Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay categories. A pleasant surprise came in the form of the inclusion of one of this site's favorite films of the year on the list of Best Animated Feature Films, "ParaNorman." Admittedly, "Wreck-It Ralph" is the movie to beat, but it's nice to see the Academy honor the charming loveletter to horror that is "Norman."

Here's the full list of Animated Features:

Tim Burton's black and white stop-motion feature "Frankenweenie" is on the way this Friday, and Disney has unleashed a series of pet-themed horror posters to commemorate the release based on classic monster Universal movies.

While the kaiju-themed "Day of the Turtle" is a real standout, I, for one, would be very happy to pay monies to see "Return of the Vampire Cat" (where did the cat go? How did it come back?) or better still, some kind of monster mash battle royale featuring all of these cursed critters.

Frankenweenie 'Lightning' Clip

Ever have one of those substitute teachers that was just a little off? Maybe they carried the constant smell of mothballs with them. Or maybe they were a little too free with anecdotes that were just a little too inappropriate for a group of 10-year-olds?

Though FanExpo Canada is relatively light on the entertainment aspect that characterizes San Diego Comic-Con, or New York Comic-Con - other than the massive focus on celebrity signings and photo ops - there was one big splash from an upcoming movie this year: Tim Burton's Frankenweenie. The Director's return to stop motion animation took up a large chunk of real estate on the Con floor with a huge showcase of characters, props, and the process of making the feature length film.

Even if you couldn't make it to FanExpo, we managed to snag enough photos to help you - pardon the pun - bring Frankenweenie to life:
